Description
I know this trade won’t be popular for Canucks fans but as a NJ fan allow me to explain…

Boeser is a great scorer and could easily get 30 goals in any season. But his next contract is going to be very expensive, he has already had a few injuries, and he doesn’t any much value outside of scoring.

If I’m NJ, I’m not trading Holtz, Hughes, 2022 unprotected 1st, or 2023 unprotected 1st. I could get behind trading 2022 or 2023 1st with protections (such as top 10) but without any protections I’d have no interest.

Boeser is a great player and would definitely fit in well with NJ, but he has a few flaws to his game which makes me hesitant to give up some of NJ most valuable assets.

would new jersey entertain zacha Walsh and a 2nd for boeser? or zacha Walsh and McLeod with an add from van? as a van fan I'd be happy with either 2 of those trades I like Walsh cause he's a righty who played well with Rathbone in the past. and I know McLeod is probably a no but man is he exactly what vans 3rd line needs a righty center who can win faceoffs

That has been the exact package that I have been saying I think it will ultimately be. I'd prefer not to lose Walsh, but I think it fits all the needs and matches up on value.

CapFriendly has it wrong. Rutherford himself has said it's lower but yeah people don't realize he can sign for less than the QO. 7.5 isn't even far off from what I'd give him so I'm sure they can work something out.

I have to think Rutherford is the one making the error here, since other sources like The Hockey Writers and The Canuck way all list that QO to be $7,5M. I fail to see why everyone would make that mistake.

That being said, I don't think Boeser's gonna cost any more than that, no matter where he ends up. He's not worth more.

The reason why Boeser does not have as much value as Gritsyuk is because there's no guarantee that Boeser ever resigns with Devils. There's risk with an RFA like Boeser and unfortunately he could be a UFA soon and unfortunately that does play a factor.

I mean there is risk for both sides there, no? And 5th round doesn't mean much. The world knows who he is now.

I highly doubt the world knows who Gritsyuk is. It’s not like he is a top 30 prospect in the league.

There is obviously risk with Boeser but it’s not because he is an RFA. And to assume NJ would acquire him without at least talking to his agent to make sure that he would be interested in signing long term is just silly.

To assume you could get Boeser for just Gritsyuk and no picks is laughable. Unfortunately you are going to be severely sad if NJ gets Boeser.

Stop overvaluing NJ players and prospects.

I don't think that's ideal for VAN honestly. I think they go for lottery protected one. Someone is bound to offer that, should Boeser get traded.

I literally just said a top 10 protected 2023 first round pick would be ideal… why would a lottery protected 2023 first round pick be more ideal for Vancouver? Wouldn’t less the protection be more ideal for Vancouver??

By lottery protection I meant that the NJ keeps the pick only if they win the lottery (basically get first or second overall).

Similar condition is in the Seth Jones trade, too.

Apologies for being unclear.

The hockey world definitely knows who Gritsyuk is. Really, ever since he played in WJC a couple of years ago. He has been one of the best young players in KHL this year and just keeps getting better and better. Honestly, I think you are taking draft position too much into account here. He has been putting up numbers that rival guys like Kucherov, Panarin (not saying he will become those guys). And you know Kaprizov was a 5th rounder too.

As for Boeser price. His pending RFA status is an enormous factor in his selling price. Give me one comp of a pending RFA that returned returned a top-5 pick and an A prospect (or even a 5th round prospect if that’s how you see Gritsyuk).

The comps I have been using:

Reinhart - late 1st and Levi
Buchnevich - 2nd and Blais
Pacioretty - 2nd, B-prospect, Tatar

I think those are fair.

The Devils don't trade for Boeser unless they know they can re-sign him, it's signing Boeser that is the independent variable here

I have no idea where you think I said NJ should trade their 2022 first rounder but you are incredibly mistaken. You really need to know your facts before saying things.

It seems like I offended you saying Gritsyuk is a fifth rounder which is a complete fact by the way. I like Gritsyuk but I’m not going to compare him to Panarin, Kaprizov, or Kucherov. Like let’s be realistic here. He isn’t even NJ top prospect or second best prospect lol. He’s a good prospect. Top 5 in NJ system. But I know he isn’t going to be the next Panarin or whatever.
