So, this trade is occurring in the event that Leddy continues to be out with injury and/or Eichel has to come back before the playoffs. Yzerman likely wants to get something for Leddy at the deadline, but him being injured puts a wrench in those plans. What's a way to make an injured player an asset? LTIR. Send Leddy to the Knights at half retention and take on some cap in return. Let's say... Michigan boy and solid veteran Alec Martinez, who'll be coming back into game action fairly soon. Detroit gets a veteran defenseman to hold down the left side until the kids come up, and Vegas gets a replacement for him at about half the price that could potentially stay buried until the playoffs come around. I'm making this a one-for-one just for simplicity, but either side could order a small addition to make it even out. Any thoughts? Would this make sense for either team, under the current circumstances?

Dude, this is akin to a reacharound. Why would Stevie Wonder do such a grand favor to Vegas? Why would anyone? Maybe he should just cut out his liver and hand that over, too.

Vegas could add. This also helps Detroit cover up the biggest hole on their team, the LHD department.

Detroit is in no hurry to grab a veteran LD. And they have no less than SIX LDs among their top dozen or so prospects. Besides, Vegas would need to add a ton to make this something Stevie Y does. He's no dummy.

Only one of those prospects is even close to NHL action. Detroit needs bodies to fill the empty space at LD in this upcoming offseason, and Martinez should be a good fit, with his experience and pedigree. Leddy has not been putting up numbers that suggest he's a valuable asset, and Martinez is the better player at this point IMO. It makes more sense for Yzerman to get an asset back for him instead of letting him go in free agency.

Dude, I get all that, but you are neglecting the single most important factor in this equation by a mile: Vegas are over a barrel HARD. They are beyond desperate to shed cap, and teams need to take advantage of that like a mofo while they can.

Or hell, just leave them as they are and let them dress 14 skaters every night.

Vegas declines. Unless Leddy is looking to be stashable on LTIR all the way until playoffs, this won’t help cap situation. They need to shed $7-8M when all are healthy, about 1 month away from that barring any other injuries.

If Detroit retains, then Vegas retains.
