Offseason Flat Cap

Description
Here is my main rule; no bringing in players with zero NHL experience, training camp is for figuring that out

The Hurricanes are losing a significant piece this offseason, that is a given with all of their RFA's. expiring contracts, but they don't have too many core pieces that need new contracts after this offseason so there are some moves that can be made

First up, Martin Necas and Jesperi Kotkaniemi are RFA's and are likely to be more open to bridge deals. Both are on 2-year deals so that their contracts end when Aho, Staal, and Skeji's contracts end it can help to resign them

Next up, the blueline, Bear and DeAngelo have been excellent this year, locking them up will secure the right side for the future. I heard an estimation between 4-5 million for Bear and a similar contract for DeAngelo

Next up, cap savings. Jake Gardiner has become luxury goods for the Hurricanes. Despite his stint on the IR, he should still have some value as a defenceman. As for who would want him? Detroit was rumored to be in on him in free agency and he'd be a low-risk Leddy replacement (if he doesn't resign) for Detroit. It would likely be for a middling return in order to convince Yzerman to help the cap situation. I'm unsure if Detroit would make this trade but this is the return that I can see them getting for Gardiner

Now comes the dilemma. Resign Niederreiter or Trocheck? My choice is Niederreiter. The Hurricanes have excellent center depth without Trocheck in Aho, Staal, and Necas and some estimates have Trocheck getting 6.5 million while Niederriter is having a down year and will likely take a slight pay cut. This helps the wing depth and he should bounce back

Finally, get some cheap depth on the open market to fill roster slots. Marc Staal seems like a solid defenceman and reuniting him with Jordan might help to convince him. Let's also bring in Eric Staal as a healthy scratch for the lol's and cool brotherly reunion. Finally, Sven Baertschi and Josh Archibald on cheap deals as extra depth

Now the Hurricanes can remain competitive, keep assets for deadline acquisitions, sign contracts to add stability and keep flexibility in the future, and despite losing Trocheck, could still compete

Bear doesn’t get above 3 million. Canes probably let him go to arb and get 2.3 million if Bear doesn’t want a 3 year deal. No way he touches 4.5 million

Marc Staal is a pylon would be the antithesis of what we need.

Nino deal is likely to be closer to Saad’s than 5 million

You aren’t getting anything valuable for Gardiner
He didn’t play for a whole year
Players better than Gardiner are getting dealt as cap dump

Red Wings decline. Gardiner will be coming off back and hip surgeries. Yzerman can do better in UFA.

I have nothing against Gardiner but there is no way Detroit gives up a good prospect and a pick for a 31yr dman.

I don't think you have to worry about Staal I think he resigns with Detroit. He plays hard and has been very good with the younger dmen.

I'm going off the rumors that I've heard about player market value, not what they are worth. Staal is a cheap depth plug that I think could work in the right circumstances

he is a cap dump, and I used Detroit as an example because they reportedly wanted him in free agency

I had no idea who that prospect was and his hockeyDB wasn't anything special. Sorry if I made Yzerman look bad

As for Staal, it's possible but he'd likely be relegated to 7th D

Most hockey fans view Staal as a washed up plug. Yzerman values his leadership and ability to show his young defensemen the ropes. He named him an assistant captain for this reason. Staal likes Detroit and I expect him to re-sign for next season. Playing every night on the 3rd defense pair with Lindstrom is much better than being a 7D. Canes don't really need him anyway.

fair enough, but like I said, it was an example of what they could (hypothetically) get, a mediocre prospect and a mid round pick

Where do we start here...

You're about 2 mil high on TDA, about a mil high on Bear.

You're about short on the Necas deal. But he cannot play center regardless.

KK is likely to be the 2C, not Staal. Jordan Staal is not a 2C

If Lorentz is asking for more than a Mil, he'll likely be moved for a prospect like Drury to take his place.

If Gardiner is healthy next year, he'll play. If not, he'll stay on LTIR. He won't be moved, there's no point.

Archibald is a worse option than most of the players already in the system to play on the bottom line.

If Pesce's playing his offside, it's going to be with someone who's defensively frail, like TDA.

Skjei has been WAY too good to put on the bottom pairing.

Martinook will not play in the top 9.

Jarvis won't play in the bottom 6.

KK is not a winger.

Marc Staal is just not a full time NHLer. Eric isn't even in the league this year, why would he be next year?

Tl;Dr - There's not a lot here that's on the right track from the Canes perspective.

If Vegas wants to move a winger, maybe they would trade for them to maintain cap compliance.

No... They're not, that's not how this works, that's not how ANY of this works. Tampa took Seabrook in a financial move, in the off season, when they were up against the cap, to move Johnson's money out (active) for Seabrook, who they could then LTIR. LTIR is not free cap space.

Also, Detroit has PLENTY of cap space, which makes this even more ridiculous.

That’s not how LTIR works. It isn’t “free cap”. If you add a contract and then subtract said contract it’s a net 0 effect. It allows you to go over the cap ceiling but the active roster is still cap compliant.

that is how it works. You can trade a non LTIR contract for a LTIR contract to maintain cap compliance. It doesnt have to be just an off-season thing.

It DOES build more accrued LTIR relief, by doing it at the beginning of the season... but the point was, that Tampa moved out an active contract, for a contract they were then able to LTIR... LTIR is not free cap space, they gained cap space by moving out Johnson... you cannot just ADD an LTIR contract and gain space... the space needs to already be there, I don't know how so many people don't get this...

its not gaining cap space but it allowing you to remove an actual cap hit and replace it with a replaceable cap hit. its not that hard.
