if its matthews and a 1st you at least have a discussion. even tho it would be a short one for the oilers.

How do you trade a top 50 winger for the best center in the league? I would say it would probably take mathews and Willy styles.

too much, you oilers fans can cry all you want but the differnce between the best player in the league and the 2/3 best player in the league is not an elite rw who is the 1rw on most teams in the nhl

I think that good sense goes out the window when we are talking about connor mcdavid. The leafs would do anything to get him and he also brings a lot more revenue to the team.

the leafs arent worried about revenue, they can be dead last in the NHL and will sell out every seat, that trade is dumb

Don't really think the leafs would trade the 3rd best player in the league plus more for the best player in the league to ''bring more revenue to the team"

Im just stating the obvious here but any discussion of McDavid for Matthews is pointless for both teams it would change almost nothing and with what everyone else is saying to me it looks like the leafs would be worse. (If the deal includes someone like Nylander along with Matthews)

Matthews straight up might be the best off they receive. McDavid has a NMC and will dictate where he wants to go and it's going to be a contender. So how many teams will be able to offer up something better than the 3rd best player in the world?

Oh yeah? Why would the Oilers be trading McDavid? That's the key question you should be asking yourself. The answer would be because he wants a trade. There is no other reason to ever trade the best player in the world. So if he wants a trade, he's going to give you a handful of teams he'd be willing to go to and you know TO (his home town) is going to be one of those teams. So if there are only a few teams in the running. Do you think they are going to sell the farm or bend Edmonton over? A straight Matthews for McDavid or Marner plus an asset for McDavid would likely be more than any other team would be able to offer. If McDavid wants out it's going to ruin Oiler fans.

Who's a top 50 winger? TO has 2 top 15 wingers.

There would be no rush to trade him even if he were to request it this year. Need a monster deal and Oilers can wait and do everything to turn things around in the mean time. I don't get the idea people have that if a player requests a trade it has to happen right away. There's no rush even if requested lol.

This is a hopeful statement. The reality is the only way McDavid ever gets traded is if he wants to be. And then you lose the trade. You can't win a trade where you lose the best player in the world. If he gives you a list of 3-4 teams, they would all be contenders. So who could that be? And who would have cap space to make it happen? If TO is one of those teams they wouldn't offer up this insane price you want. Why? Because they won't need to. No contender has the future pieces you would want for a rebuild and few have the cap space to take on McDavid. If we look at TO, you could ask for a star player and some extra assets but they won't come close to adding up to McDavid. I bet you could get Matthews and a secondary asset but not much else. Maybe Marner and a 1st, possibly another asset if you take on Mrazek as well. But it's going to be a disappointing return.

No one is going to offer a fair deal for McDavid, because it's going to be a small number teams in the running.

It wouldn't happen until the off season but if he wants out, he's going to give a list of teams and say get it done. You aren't going to be able to jerk him around, if you do he can just sit out until it happens and your negotiating power is even less. This is the point, you aren't ever even going to consider moving him, unless he demands it and then you are going to lose. A limited market on a disgruntled player is going to wreck your return.

He is under contract he can't just sit out for no reason. People forget that almost very trade request isn't fulfilled until the right return happens or the player turns face and wants to stay. Plus it connor McDavid not some random middle 6 forward. Everyone knows he's the best in the world and would draw a bidding war for. If you think he can a) sit out b) not get a moster return because of request then you really don't understand how hockey markets work with high calibre players.

He absolutely can sit out, the team would then suspend him without pay until he was traded or he decided to play. Which he wouldn't because he wants a trade. If it got to that then the return would be even worse for the Oilers.

This is why if McDavid wanted out, it would wreck the Oilers. You will lose the trade big time. If TO was your best option, getting Matthews and a 2nd may be the best you could hope for. And I bet you would have to take on someone like Mrazek or Ritchie as well. It wouldn't be good.
