What are you genuinely expecting? A guy they publicly stated they wanted to get rid of.. teams are doing them a favour by taking him on... SJ is saving money by retaining half VS buying him out.. the Sharks want to trade him because retaining helps more with cap..

I really don’t think the pens give anything up. They went to scout to do their due diligence and if the sharks throw in a sweetener and take a contract like Matheson back then they may do it. But they aren’t giving up solid guys like Heinen or Zucker who are good locker room guys to bring in a locker room cancer like Kane who is one screw up away from a long suspension.

I guess sharks fans forgot how much of a cancer he is and the fact that he has a modified no trade clause that is pretty much a full no trade clause. He can only be traded to 3 teams of his choice. The sharks have zero leverage. I don’t understand why people keep paying for him. The sharks will have to pay to get rid of him.

I couldn't agree more. Kane is about as radioactive as you can get. I'm more surprised that the Penguins are actually giving up anything at all to get him. $7 million per against the cap? For him? That's just WAY too much. The Sharks would have to give a massive sweetener to get someone to take him AND retain half of Kane's cap hit in the process AND take on a bad contract in return. This is as no-win of a situation as you can get. Sorry, Sharks' fans. I seriously feel for you: you didn't ask for this. frown

Buying him out is cheaper so if we're retaining 50% we're getting value back. If not the team is happy to wait for the off-season to buy him out.

Honestly I really like these moves. We get Kane without giving up too much, get rid of two huge contracts we have, and we also get exactly the type of player we need for the team in Brendan Gallagher. I know it will get criticism because they're bigger moves, but I honestly think these would really help the team. We always play great regular season, but need a more physical player like Gallagher to be more balanced for the playoffs.

      Its really not...
2021-22: This season, since you cant buy him out, he is staying in the AHL, which is costing you $5.875M against the cap. Trading him at 50% is $3.5M, so you would save cap this year.
2022-23: If you trade, it is still $3.5M. If you were to buy him out, it would cost $3.66M.. a marginal win for the trade.
2023-24: Trade is $3.5M, buyout is $2.66M, so for this year alone, buyout saves you $.
2024-25: Buyout is $4.66M, so trade is saving you $
2025-26, 2026-27, 2027-28: Buyout is at $1.66M, but if you would have traded him, he is off your books by then, so another 3 years where trading is beneficial.
In total, 1 of the 7 years benefits you if you buyout, whereas 6 of the 7 years benefits you if you trade him. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I get that it is a bit of a risk. You defo need to send some value to the 3rd team, who allows you to get Kane at 1.75M instead of 3.5M. He is a risk in the locker room, but with guys like Sid, Geno, Carter, Letang and even Lemieux at the top, I feel like he will just put his head down and play. Like you said, you mistake away from being done. Honestly, if he realizes that, he wont mess up because he knows he is done after one dumb move. If it pays off, acquiring a guy of his caliber with the type of points he puts up for such a cheap value could be huge down the line. If it doesnt pay off, you send him down, which will cost about 600k on the cap and you just bench him. You wont find a cheaper 30 goal scorer though.

I see the pens trading more value to the 3rd team for retaining than to the sharks. I think both pens and sharks trade an asset to the 3rd team and the sharks will have to pay the better asset. They are the ones that have to get rid of him. No one has to take him on. He’s the massive risk. He has the power to list only 3 teams he can be traded to. And sure at the end of the day in this deal if it doesn’t work out you can bench him in the Ahl but that is still 600k the pens could use elsewhere. The pens are going to be up against the cap until Crosby retires at the bare minimum. And I don’t see them ever tanking while Crosby is here. Then on top of it that you take on Gallagher. That contract is already starting to look bad because Gallagher is starting to break down. Imagine it in a year or 2. Again another player the pens shouldn’t pay for.
