Fleury Wasted So Many Years Of Prime Sid-Geno

Explications
I used to be a big Fleury defender when he was still on the team. I knew he struggled every playoffs but I just didn't know who they could go after as a replacement. The guy was a 1st overall pick, I always had hope he would get better eventually but unfortunately it never happened. Looking back, I realized how overrated he was, outside of a strong 2007/08 Stanley Cup run, he was carried by the skater group every season. The Penguins from 2009-2014 had a 54% xGF share yet had the worst GSAx in the league every year. Even with average goaltending, they would've won the cup at least once during that period.

Do you guys think the team I built would have won a cup or two?

Put Lundqvist or Price on any of those years and I guarantee that you’d have more cups. Fleury outside of different moments was absolutely carried by the Penguins. This dude has great moments but is nowhere near as good or dominant as people make him seem to be.

Completely agree, I can’t believe people rank him as a first ballot HOF. Out of his 3 cups, only 2017 was a legitimate one (even there he didn’t play the full tournament). He had more choke jobs than successes.

My biggest issue was they definitely could’ve made it further a few more years if he hadn’t choked as bad as he did. Lucky for him they had a great team and won 3 times. If he were on the Habs or Rangers he would’ve never carried a team anywhere close to a finals appearance.

Absolutely. Put him on another team he wouldn’t win as much.

I think it’s the style of goaltending he plays that hurts him. Positioning is probably one of his main problems that Lund and price don’t really have.

I think it’s the style of goaltending he plays that hurts him. Positioning is probably one of his main problems that Lund and price don’t really have.

Yeah he tries to show off his athleticism a bit too much but the basics aren’t very good, like he gives up so many rebounds.

they won three cups and he's one of sid's best friends. i'm sure he doesn't regret too much about how that went down.

HE may not regret it but I’m sure the Pens do. Bylsma & Shero had to sacrifice themselves to keep him.

Yes. It should have been 7-2 when we played Chicago. We had him beat. But we hit the post 4 post in reg and 2 in the shootout

Fleury has always been extremely lucky vs WSH.

That’s fair, but keep in mind the Penguins in 2 of their 3 cup wins got subpar goaltending.

i think it's a combination of that, plus the lack of depth we had. It's funny to look back at the rosters with like 2 injuries, and all of a sudden Craig Adams is our 2nd line RWer. We never really had a chance til the HBK line became a thing

Yeah, 375 wins, 44 shutouts, 0.912 save% and 2.58 GAA really is garbage. LOL

When you consider the team in front of him, it's really not impressive.

Look at the stats. From 2009-2014 he ranked last amongst starters in goals saved above expected during the playoffs. He was garbage.

But THAT had nothing to do with teams in front of him, it was all his fault. I bet as a Pens fan you respect Mario, so why would Mario keep him around is he was garbage as you say? I would think Mario knows a little more about hockey than you do. My bet is Mario would tell you the same as me, your being absurd.

Mario also approved the GM’s decision to sign Jack Johnson to a 6 year contract to be the team’s top pair defender. Sometimes the higher ups are loyal to players who aren’t good.
