I feel like that name would be better suited if they played for the Rangers, but it's still a good name so I'm using it. I decided not to go after any big free agents in this one (at the expense of the cap floor) just to see where a few prospects could land in the lineup a couple years from now. Not too many veterans were kept, just Gagner and Leddy. I have a feeling Gagner could stay with the Wings until retirement, it just seems like such a good fit for both the player and the team. Leddy stays as a LHD to transition the prospects through, he's a good veteran that should be able to play wherever we need him, and with a decent cap hit he's easily moveable if he loses his usefulness near the end of the contract. As for the prospects I chose to come up, Edvinsson and Johansson are the obvious answers for the top 4, Berggren and Veleno should be starting the transition into their primes (as long as Berggren comes in next season), and Niederbach feels like the perfect player to center Fabbri and Zadina if we decide to let Suter go. The fourth line is filled in with a finite but feisty Finn and a substantially sizable Swede, centered by Jordan Staal lite (even though Ras is bigger). I also decided that this should be the year Cossa gets his first games in the NHL, and McIsaac gets the 7D role so that he gets some chances to cement a spot before it's too late. Other candidates for a LHD spot include Wallinder, Sebrango, and Viro. I would personally be very excited to see the roster get filled up with young guns like this, but I already know most of these guys will marinate in the minors and slowly take away spots from veterans that Stevie signs along the way. It's probably a better system, but I'd love to see our D corps get enhanced like this without having to spend all of that term on free agents that'll just block up the process further down the road. I'm excited for the future, and with another first round pick to spend in the upcoming draft, that future might even include a young center like Lambert or Geekie. The present is meh, but I'm finally starting to see the pieces come together.
Doesn’t it make more sense to separate them and pair a defensive Dman in Edvinsson next to an offensive Dman in Hronek? And then find a Girard type offensive Dman to pair next to Seider?

Looking at Edvinsson's tape from the SHL, he would be the perfect complement to Seider. He's an high octane offensive Dman whenever he enters the zone (he goes deep into the zone regularly while Seider rarely ever passes the faceoff circles), and while he's great defensively, his toolkit reaches far beyond that. I can understand wanting to pair Hronek with a defensive guy, and Edvinsson definitely makes sense for that, but an Edvinsson-Seider pairing should wipe the floor with the competition. I'll admit it makes more sense to put Johansson next to Seider and Edvinsson next to Hronek, as they'd mask each other's deficiencies a little better, but I'm not sure how ready Johansson would be for such big minutes at this time.
While it would be nice to trade for an offensive defenseman that's a known asset, I can see Johansson and Wallinder as the answers to that hole, and only one of them needs to reach their potential to be a good partner for Seider. To be honest, while I know how much better that second pairing could be if Edvinsson was on it, I'd really love to see an Edvinsson-Seider pairing that can absolutely dominate both ends of the ice.

On NHL 21 , I used to always draft him and have him become my top pairing LHD. Not often you get a 6’4 LD who’s not a slow skater and can absolutely destroy a guy with a hit lol
New @EPRinkside:I started watching Simon Edvinsson with expectations that he'd be a raw, mistake-prone defenceman.Instead, I saw a standout creator in the midst of rapid improvement, on track to become the Red Wings' next top-pairing defender. https://t.co/03v4VRy4jn

True, it's crazy how smooth his skating is for his size. Him and Seider both have that smooth skating ability but Edvinsson is on another level. One part of his game that I find amazing is how elite his passes are. While he sometimes has lapses in his decision making (not as much as before the draft though), I've seen several highlight passes from him that left me awestruck. Making the kind of offensive plays that he does as an 18yo in the SHL is just insane, and his defense is so solid he's getting started in his own zone ~70% of the time. That's a lot of trust from an organization like Frolunda, who usually tend to shelter their young players a bit more than necessary.

Imagine a couple years from now when we've got Johansson + Seider and Edvinsson + Hronek eating up 44-46 minutes of the game.
