Description
This is a lot of movement and change, but it makes sense… to me anyway.
Kane starts all this and is the key to next season success or failure.
In this scenario Kane is presented an ultimatum, agree to mutually terminate his contract or we bury him in the minors for the remainder of his deal. This should work because if he fails to show we then have cause to suspend him without pay.
The players association may balk at this but our offer is pay his deal in full over 8 years minus his roster bonuses, this equates to 15 mil or 1.875 a year. he then gets to go elsewhere and play for more money so this would end up being a win win for both the club and him. this is similar to the deal Richards took in LA.
with the majority of his cap hit off the books we can now look at building on the progress we made this year!
Simek, Labanc, and Bonino are traded to free up cap space and spots for our younger players.
chmevelski, Blichfeld, are traded to give them a chance at making an NHL roster because i just don’t see them making our lineup now or in the future.
pedersen is a waiver wire pickup or he plays in the AHL next season as he has not been good for us this year but has some talent.

Offensively
Pavelski addition is a temporary placeholder till the prospects are ready to step up. he will sign a 1-2 year deal and add leadership and bring in fans plus he’s still producing enough to make his spot in the top 6 viable short term.
Eklund returns and plays in the top 6, obviously!
Weatherby steps up for a season as our 3C till Bordeleau steals that spot next year.
Noah, Nieto, Leonard, Barabanov, Balcers Merkley and Viel all battle for playing time and roster spots for the year and by seasons end we will know who from this group will entrench theirselves as players in our future plans or be let go, traded in the 2023 offseason or end up buried in the minors next year.
I thought about bringing up Gushin, Raska, Robins, Bordeleau, Weisblatt, Coe, and Reedy but i feel like all would benefit from a year with the Cuda.
Next year all of these guys will be pushing for spots with the big club.

Defensively
This is a lot easier as we return most of our 2021 players
Ferraro and Burns remain out top pair.
Karlsson remains our 3rd D and mainstay on the 2nd pairing, with Rookie Merkley as our 3rd pair RD and power play specialist.
LD Middleton and Knyzhov could be flip flopped depending on chemistry. Kinazev and Hatakka are considered for bottom pairing but here i opted to have them get 1 more year in AHL growing their game.
Vlasic is relegated to healthy scratch due to his diminished play. it’s this or he will have to retire. i would prefer to wait till the 23 offseason to buy him out if it comes to that. i’m really hoping he retires during the 2022 offseason.
Goal
this stays the same at the NHL level
i opt to resign Melnichuyk for 1 more year along with Chrona and Gaudreau. Gaudreau will play in the OHL or WHL for the year and Chrona, Melnichuyk, and Edmonds fight for playing time with the weaker of the 3 getting starts in the ECHL
I kept Melnichuyk only because he is the best option for emergency goalie till the others get a little more seasoning.

what does everyone think? i know i can get long winded with my descriptions

Kane is done in SJ. with the threat of us burying him in the minors he agrees to a mutual termination of his contract. we pay him full base salary minus roster bonuses (15 mil) but with the termination we are allowed to pay it over 8 years reducing his cap hit. this also allows him to go make more money with another team (or in Europe if no one wants him here in the NHL) I feel this will end up being a win win for both parties.
Similar deal was done with Richards in LA for reference.

Honestly agree with a large majority of what's here, good job. The Kane mutual termination route is probably the most ideal one out there apart from him getting traded with no salary retained (which just wont happen).

I know it's nitpicky, but even though I understand the rationale behind trading Sasha and Blich, I'd just keep em. If guys need to be moved out for ice time purposes I'd honestly rather send out Leonard and/or Viel. And it's kinda sad but at this point Sawchenko looks better than every other goalie prospect we have lol. I just don't have confidence in Chrona or Émond. Literally everything else is 👌 though.

If Tampa's 2nd is what you'll take for Kevin Labanc, then Ottawa accepts.

i hate that trade but we need a 2nd and Labanc just isn’t fitting in sJ. he needs to be on a 2nd line in a system he fits in. this is more to help the player succeed than the return.

Chrona has some upside so i want to work with him but Gaudreau is my favorite but he is 3-4 years out and i want us to take our time with him. Melnichuyk edmonds and sawchenko all have potential but i don’t see any of them as anything more than an AHL goalie/ NHL fringe backup. but Goalie development is tricky. i am trading chmevelski and blich because I would want players to know i’m looking out for their best interests and I’d rather them succeed than bury them just in case. this is a pay it forward kind of thing and helps us grab quality undrafted FA and guys coming over from Europe! this give us an upper hand for guys like Barabanov and gives us another avenue for finding players to help our club.
and i feel Leonard is solid defensively with offensive upside, same with Noah, and Viel gives us grit so i keep them for now.

I wouldn't want another Gambrell situation with Weatherby. I'd say we play Pavelski in that 3C and play Barabanov in the top 6. It's proven he can produce and is much better playing in the top 6. Everything else I really like though. It's gonna be interesting to see who we draft this year.

I'm really Hoping for a bigger RD with offensive upside, someone we can work with for the next 3 years and then he would be Burns replacement, that or if a potential 1C falls to us.
Gambrel lost his spot as 4C to Weatherby because Weatherby did everything Gambrell did... just better and he forced the sharks hand on that one!!!
you may be right and I like Barabanov a lot!! but Pavelski has good chemistry with Couture and it would be good to surround Eklund with those two for his development!
plus this way Balcers and Barabanov make up a solid 3rd line and ad some scoring depth to our team, regardless of who is the C. I wouldn't be opposed to Robins or Bordeleau in the 3C if they tear it up in camp but I want to develop them and not rush them, Gregor is another option at 3C and he's having a really good start to his year in the AHL.
all of this is fluid and will depend on players development and camp obviously!

      Been a while since I agree basically entirely with a (larger) post. I would personally do;

Dahlen - Couture - Meier (If it aint broke dont fix it)
Eklund - Hertl - Pavs ( <3 if he could actually come back)
Both lines could be our first line on a given night^

Balcers - Bonino (keep him)/ Weatherby - Barabanov
Leonard - Weatherby/ Bonino - Viel (or another rookie)

      Ferraro - Burns
      Middleton/ Knyzhov - Karlsson
      Knyzov/ Middleton - Merkley

Thanks! I am in agreement with your idea on the lines as well, there is going to be a little fluidity in the lines as guys step up in camp and I would assume one of the prospects I have in the minors forces their way into the lineup. the only issue with keeping Bonino is we would have to run with a 22 man roster or we would end up over the Cap and I like him but offensively he just does not fit well in our scheme.
If Vlasic retires in the offseason we would be golden! but I don't see that happening and I don't want to buy out a guy with 4 years left on his deal so he ends up our 7th D amn and a scratch most nights barring an injury.
another idea is if Knyzhov isn't the same player when he comes back from injury we look at dealing his rights in the offseason and look ad Kinazev or Hatakka making the opening night roster, they both look close!

the biggest thing about this lineup that makes me excited for our future is we are starting to have some options and players are starting to force their way in and making us look at difficult choices (like the Gambrell choice we had to make)
we also have more prospect who will be NHL ready sooner than later who will have to fight really hard to make the lineup instead of being given spots and that's is a great thing to have on a team.
Oh and your top two lines I kind of prefer over mine, but I'm banking on Pavelski and Couture's chemistry together and using them both as mentors to Eklund.
but at the same time find it really hard to break up Couture Dahlin Meier, I don't think that line has had 1 bad game together this year.

Very True I think either way he has a good supporting cast!
people don't give enough credit to Damphouse for the effect he had on Marleau, that trade helped Marleau reach his potential.
