Yep, there are a lot of players that were extremely close to being lifers for their team, but have 1-2 seasons elsewhere that prevent it. Some examples include Gordie Howe (Whalers), Ray Bourque (Avs), Johnny Bucyk (Wings), Mike Modano (Wings), and Martin Brodeur (Blues).
Bucyk is an interesting one because his stint came at the start of his career, putting up middling numbers for the Red Wings, and then getting traded in a one-for-one for Terry Sawchuk at the age of 22. He then went on to play 21 seasons for the Bruins. Based on how the careers of these two players are remembered now, it’s strange that Detroit was the one trading Bucyk and Boston was trading Sawchuk, and not the other way around.
The best case scenario is "After 22 years, Raymond Bourque!". If a player can leave and FINALLY win the ring, all that pain is gone. The problem is that when they don't all you're left with as a fan is the pain of them leaving, and the pain of them retiring without a cup. As a Sens fan, you're just left with a frustration that he left, and a frustration that he is not in the Hall of Fame. how many guys have 1200GP, 1100Pts, 400G, and 100 playoff points and AREN'T in the HOF?
Also Gordie Howe I wouldn't really have in that same conversation, even though it is literally true that he only played one NHL season not with the Detroit Red Wings. The man spent basically an entire decade playing hockey in a different league in between leaving Detroit and joining Hartford.
