    This makes us worse. We lose a top 6 forward and gain a goalie who had a ,908 for our entire future

    Last year, Koskinen had a GAA of 3.17, save % of 0.899 and won 13 games for a playoff team
    Last year, Gibson had a GAA of 2.98, save % of 0.903 and won 9 games for the 30th of 31 teams

    Career, Koskinen has a GAA of 2.97 and save % of 0.907
    Career, Gibson has a GAA of 2.58 and save % of 0.917, and there are subtle indications he has played on inferior teams

    Koskinen = low mileage! he's a mature 33 years old but has started only 114 games in the NHL
    Gibson = high mileage! he's an immature 28 years old (both born in July) and has started 314 games in the NHL

    Koskinen = exciting: gives Edmonton the chance to go shopping for a REAL goalie next summer!
    Gibson = boring: fills the goaltender position for the next 6 years

    Gibson = someone we'll keep
    Koskinen = someone we wouldn't pick up on waivers

    I think the Ducks would think long and hard about this, but that Oilers would decline.

    There's a simple way of looking at the Ducks with Gibson-There's zero reason to move him without being blown away by a trade offer. If the offer isn't there, there's no reason to just move him for the sake of moving him. That being said, this really mortgages the Oilers future.

    It's very rare that I'll cite the eye test, because it rarely works. I'm very into analytics, and will cite them on a regular basis when valuing players. My opinion: It's pretty easy to watch Gibson and understand why many consider him to still be one of the best goalies on the planet. Just watch Dallas Eakins defensive scheme. It's basically zone defence...it looks like the Ducks are on the PK when they're in their own zone. They just stand there and wait for the puck to come to them, instead of playing with any sort of physicality. Yes, we can look at Gibby's HDsv%, and his GSAA, but neither really account for what's really going on in front of him. Packing your entire team between the puck and the net certainly creates more blocked shots, but when you don't have the type of player that plays like that, it instead creates a ridiculous screen, causing a bunch of garbage looking goals where the goalie didn't even see the puck. Pretty much equivalent to being a quarter back that can't see over his offensive line in football.

    I'm a Ducks fan, so I can't sit here and say that I'm unbiased. What I can do is suggest that if you have a chance to go back and watch a few games that they played last year, judge for yourselves. There are no metrics in the world that account for how poorly coached the Ducks were last year, and why they struggled as bad as they did.

    To which I can only add, I think it's telling that three of Gibson's nine wins last year were shutouts.

    Gibson used to be good, but since his injuries in 2018-19 he's been below average. At this point he's a cap dump, the best thing for Anaheim to do is to hold on to him and keep hoping he returns to form. Maybe this year, maybe next year, maybe the year after... keep hoping.

    I remember watching a loss to Vegas last year, where the "Eakin's Scheme" was in full effect. It's essentially the trap, only you collapse until you're on top of your own goalie, and rarely make a play to regain puck possession. Think he had 50+ shots and only let in 4 goals...almost looked like they were playing rec hockey.

    So you're saying he's super inconsistent? Lets check his Quality Starts %... yup, .431 isn't good. Well below Mikko's .515, in fact.

    Koskinen has faced a similar number of shots and high danger shots over the past 2 years, with similar results.

    John Gibson is a cap dump.

    "Cap dump" tears of joy

    I'm not chirping here, and not attempting to be a d1ck (It's very hard to tell on the internet sometimes!). I'm also not going to argue with you, because there's no point...all I want to say is that I absolutely knew you'd pop up! I even thought about tagging you here. It's almost like you have a "Gibson to the Oilers" alert on your phone. All you need is a "Gibson is bad!" auto-reply, and you'd never have to worry about missing out tears of joy

    You can't argue with the facts, and the facts tell me that Gibson is a below average goalie with a HUGE contract. I'm not scared to call a spade a spade, even if the rest of the users on this site are stuck in 2018.

    Just watch him, man. Watch the team in front of him. Watch what happens when your coach tries to create a trap-based team that can't trap.

    Regardless, it's fine to never watch a guy, and only judge him based on his hockey-reference page. I would never blame someone for not watching that team play-they're on late, and they're not good.

    Cheers.

    He's faced similar # of shots and HD shots as Mikko Koskinen over the past 2 years, yet he doesn't post better stats and has worse QS%. Why can't you understand that?

    I watch the Oilers, so "late" isn't a factor, I'm familiar with Eakins, and other than this past season I see more of the Ducks than most teams as I'm watching Pacific division. If you took a second to think about it you'd realize all that, instead of acting like a d!ck.

    Nope. Over the past 2 years at 5v5:
    .916 vs .915, but he faces fewer shots per 60: 31.07 vs 32.34

    But his performance with high danger shots isn't nearly as good:
    .814 vs .833, with slightly more shots faced: 8.78 vs 8.50

    I can't believe I'm having an argument with a sentient human being who is trying to argue that the numbers support his position that Mikko Koskinen = John Gibson, for even one season.

    Gibson = 53% of Anaheim's wins
    Koskinen = 37% of Edmonton's wins

    Gibson = 66.7% of Anaheim's losses
    Koskinen = 62% of Edmonton's losses, in 9 fewer games (i.e., 4% less for a team that lost 48% less than Anaheim)

    Gibson = 0.903 save%
    Koskinen = 0.899 save %

    Gibson = 2.98 GAA
    Koskinen =3.17 GAA

    Those are objective, not subjective, numbers. ("High-danger shots" my @$$ = ANY shot Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl take is a high-danger shot.)

    I can't believe I'm having an argument with a sentient human being who is trying to argue that the numbers support his position that Mikko Koskinen = John Gibson, for even one season.

    Gibson = 53% of Anaheim's wins
    Koskinen = 37% of Edmonton's wins

    Gibson = 66.7% of Anaheim's losses
    Koskinen = 62% of Edmonton's losses, in 9 fewer games (i.e., 4% less for a team that lost 48% less than Anaheim)

    Gibson = 0.903 save%
    Koskinen = 0.899 save %

    Gibson = 2.98 GAA
    Koskinen =3.17 GAA

    Those are objective, not subjective, numbers. ("High-danger shots" my $$ = ANY shot Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl take is a high-danger shot.)

    Lol, Gibson didn't face McDavid or Draisaitl in the past season, the ONLY one which you're quoting numbers from. Stop telling lies.

    Go back and post the 2 year overall numbers and you'll see similar results.
