BUFFALO TRADE

In a bid to convince Eichel to stay in Buffalo, the Sabres make a big swing with their future picks and ample cap space to get another stud center in Pettersson. With the two stud C's along with Dahlin, Power, Cozens, Olofsson, Quinn, etc, they have the new(ish) young core to try to turn the corner. At least that's the plan. Suffice to say Eichel has never lined up with a player as talented as Petey.

For VAN, any trade where they lose Petey would hurt a lot. But this deal frees up a ton of cap space and delivers what should be some high-quality draft picks in the next couple prospect-rich drafts.

ST. LOUIS TRADE

The Blues are in a tight cap spot as there seem to be no reasonable Tarasenko trade options out there, and Thomas still needs a contract after a rough season last year. The Canucks offer a couple picks (more than what the Blues would receive on an offer sheet) to see if Thomas can overcome injuries and get back on track in his development.

Overall this is a obviously a huge downgrade in the Canucks lineup right away, but the added draft capital and cap flexibility could make it worth it in the long run, especially if Thomas can reach his ceiling.
