Even IF Ottawa wanted this deal it would never happen. Tavares signed with the Leafs because he's a hometown boy and he believed they were a legit contender (the fool).
He'd only waive his NMC to go somewhere he felt was an immediately contender. Thankfully that ISN'T Ottawa (yet).

From Ottawa's perspective, the 4 years of $11M cap hit (at the declining age of 31 - 34) would eventually hurt us. Norris, Pinto, Stützle, Zub, Brännström, JBD are all due for new contracts while Tavares' is still there.

Players sign with NMC not to never be traded, but to have control over where and when they're traded. Just because a player has a NMC, doesn't mean they won't waive it. They do quite frequently actually. It's more protection so they don't have to suddenly uproot their families and lives to another city, especially if they don't want to.

I don't see any reason as to why Barkov would not extend with Florida. Not only it's a great place to live/play, plus he's making more net salary, but the Panthers are on the verge of being serious contenders. Their owner is quite rich and they're spending to the cap. They have a lot of great pieces who are young enough. If Spencer Knight is for real, watch out

Leafs on the other hand, I don't see much future there. And I have been thinking that all the way back to a few years ago when everyone was jealous or praising them, or Leafs fans were bragging all the way. Looks like I wasn't wrong so far.
