Description
General idea for this one:

Having Newhook play between two proven veterans puts the kid in an excellent position for immediate success. If he can handle the role, which I think he can, this then allows Kadri to slide down and play with two guys I believe he could thrive with. Jost and Nichushkin work well together to drive the play, but they need a finisher to meet their full potential. Kadri brings his goal scoring talents to that line. I think he could possibly hit 20+, even in more of a checking role. A little sandpaper added helps too.

I also like that the team replenishes their draft picks via the trades, as they could use a few more guys in the system after the graduation of Newhook, Byram, Ranta, and Timmins. In short, they take advantage of being a desirable destination for UFAs, while getting value for a couple players they can afford to lose as a result of the UFA signings.

Not sure what Hall gets in the open market, but I kinda don't think teams are going to want to commit a ton at this point (especially good teams). This number would make him the second highest paid player on the Bruins, so I'm not sure they go that high. Maybe Hall to Colorado makes sense. This spot could also be filled by someone like Hyman though.

Finally, sorry to the Kaut fans. I just don't think the organization is high on him, so I'm going to keep trading him in my ACGMs. He could have a nice career, but I don't think it's in Colorado.

LTIR = the prospects I think have a shot (in order) with favorite at the top.

You’re justifying trading a 20 goal scorer, former 1st rd pick still on an elc and a 5th for in all honesty 2 throw away picks. You don’t get to justify making a bad trade by saying well we made that bad trade and used the cap space to justify it. You want to piss off ownership, that’s a great way of doing it.

Sure you do if the team ends up being better off for it. The Avs don't seem to think much of Kaut, Bura isn't long for the Avs and making space for players like Saad and Hall make the team better right now. If I'm an owner, I expect my GM to make the team better, not keep score on individual trades.

What matters with Schmidt was what he was before the trade though. He had much more value than what Vegas got.

I actually feel I'm in the minority on Kaut, and that most Avs fans have high hopes and want to keep him. We'll see. He has become pretty polarizing. My main thing is that the team doesn't seem super high on him. And if that's the case, then why not just move on and let him have a shot elsewhere?

The puzzling thing for me about Kaut is the basis of the pick was it was a safe pick, high floor lower ceiling, and last year they intentionally didn’t play him to slide his ELC. It is always tough with the Avs and injuries because they don’t disclose anything and Kaut did get hurt, but playing guys like O’Brien and Megna just didn’t make sense to me. Maybe your right and they soured on him, but kid was a recent 1st rd pick and personally I think he is going to be a real solid middle 6 forward but if you don’t give him a chance you will never know.

I think they lure veteran AHL guys with promises they'll have preference when call ups are needed. I'm not sure about that, but it just seems to make sense.

But yeah, like anyone else, I would have liked to see more of Kaut and some of Bowers. The Megnas and Drieses of the world don't get me excited for the future. It's different and more fun as a fan when I get to see Newhook, Ranta, Kaut, etc. for obvious reasons.

Bednar said they still like Kaut, Bowers, etc. but are just being patient with their development. We'll see. Kaut sure didn't seem to be in Bednar's good graces when he was up with the club. That's really what I'm going on with my assumptions. In the end I'm just a dude who gatherers what I can from observation, so I could be 110% wrong.

Yeah, but that has been my one **** about Bednar is that reluctance to play those young guys. I mean why in the world did O’Brien even play a single game? And then when he is forced to play a young guy they are almost a lock to play 9 minutes, I just don’t know. I’m a lot like you I try to be honest in my observations and assessments, and I know I have a weakness for really liking guys with speed because it is so difficult to play against. But I do think they really missed against those hard to play against guys with speed like LOC & Calvert against VGK. I dunno maybe I’m wrong on my but I’ll talk hockey all day long.
