Ok wait. There might be something here. Canes can't protect all their dmen. Hamilton signs as a UFA with Vancouver, Vancouver protect Schmidt, Myers and Hamilton?(I mean, besides Hughes who would they wanna protect?) Vancouver trades Hamilton to Carolina after the expansion draft for pieces.

I think the fact that he is a UFA allows him to sign with us even if he is selected by Seattle, but if Seattle selects him in the ExD they would probably give him a blank check that we aren't willing to give him anyways.

Not for a UFA. They wouldn’t pick him unless they had a deal in place but if they did do that for some reason and he chose not to sign there he’s still free to sign with any other team.
