Pettersson has never played a top-line role, he is struggling on the bottom pairing.

Sabres can get more for Eichel, Kings are likely out anyways.

Vilardi needs to prove he can play top-6 minutes and be effective in the faceoff circle before the Rangers want him.

Buffalo trade probably isn't quite enough. Swap out Durzi for Kupari and it would be more fair.

No way to the NYR and Pittsburgh trades though.

Pettersson played briefly in a top line role. He didn’t struggle in a bottom 6 role. Don’t understand why non pens fans don’t actually research before just repeating what trolls that need a whipping boy say lol. The reason his offensive stats took a hit was because he played a more defensive role this season now that JJ is gone. Him and Marino were the shut down d pair when they finally reunited.

I did look into it, it seems he really hit a brick wall last season and moved down the lineup and kept playing more sheltered minutes, similar to what you all did with JJ. Personally, I don't think he's worth the contract he has any longer with the cap crunch and his usage. The Kings already tried a gamble on a guy who played bottom-4 minutes on the top line with Maata, that gamble isn't worth it for his contract. I also don't think the Kings have an interest when there are more suitable players available in the free agency at a cheaper cap hit. Just my opinion though.

No that’s not at all what happened. He didn’t play similar sheltered minutes like JJ. He played a shutdown role with Marino. When the pens were protecting the lead, they stuck Marino and Pettersson out there. That’s not exactly sheltered minutes. JJ didn’t even really get sheltered minutes. The pens are injury cursed and kinda prevent that anyway. JJ played a lot with Letang because Dumo got cheap shotted by the flyers and was injured for a good bit of the season lol. Sully simply rolled 3 pairs this season because his cheapest pair was a combined 6+ million cap hit. If any defenseman got a sheltered role, it was Matheson. Hence why he played as well as he did. Pettersson didn’t hit a brick wall. His offensive stats weren’t as good because he played a more defensive/shutdown role this year. His advanced metrics didn’t suffer which proves he didn’t “hit a brick wall”
As for the kings having no interest, you may be right.

Sounds like he’s a bottom pair shutdown role, not sure that translates to all special teams 22+ min a night role player, would prefer (even overpaying) a 1-2 year contract for Edler, Montour, or Murray. So the Kings get a player with a history of being trusted with 20+ min a night, until Bjornfot and Anderson are ready.

He’s not. He’s a second pair shutdown role. He gets second pair minutes. You can try to pretend all you want to lower what he is but it’s just not true lol. He didn’t need to play special teams this year except when injuries happened because Letang, Dumo, Marino, and Ceci played short handed. Letang, Marino, and Matheson played PP. Letang played both because he is the franchise dman. Marino played both because he is Letangs heir apparent. When Dumoulin was out and Marino was out with Covid, Pettersson stepped in to their special team roles. He didn’t play special teams due to not needing to. But still played 15-18 minutes per night depending on the night. Ceci and Matheson played the same but also usually got 2-5 minutes of special teams time too.

That's great, sounds like you feel you have a player who you feel will be valuable for the Penguins and on a fair contract. The Kings don't see him as a top-pairing player at 16:29 TOI, capable of keeping up with Doughty 26:23 TOI. So he can stay with the Penguins, and the Kings will look elsewhere for a player who can play top-line minutes in all situations.
