Drouin is a big question mark which makes it hard to assess value, but regardless, you are trading three 1st rounders for a 55pts player, that's a bit delusional
Just because they are drafted in the first round doesn't mean they infinitely carry that type of value. If Drouin's "question mark" is for the worst, that's a pay to move contract. Looking at the market right now, nobody is taking a player like that on that cap hit for free. He would clear waivers until there's more certainty.
Poehling has been eternally overrated due to his hat trick game. I know he's had decent success in the AHL this year, but his game has struggled to translate. He probably has the pure value of a fourth. Nobody is paying a third for a likely bust (or if not bust, someone who is faring significantly lower than their draft selection.
I had the values of both of the above players cancel. Even some habs fans know in their hearts that Drouin isn't a positive value player, but still pretend he is out of stubbornness. The only argument that makes some sense is to wait. Wait to see what he does. Thing is that the 5.5m in cap could go to far greater especially given what you guys have to resign in a limited cap value.
As such, a really late first in a mediocre draft year and a solid but not elite defensive prospect for a well rounded top 6er doesn't seem delusional at all. Garland is used in a strictly defensive system and even still he is able to succeed in both areas of the ice. It's not a stretch to say that under a more balanced coach than Tocchet, his offense would have a higher ceiling.
These aren't the types of players you can get for a few random picks and a bunch of internally overrated prospects. Garland carries value on this market. Pay up.
