Détails additionnels:
Before you criticize this trade and try trolling me ...

Please know that you spent at least 3 first round picks + a recent 1st round pick on Goodrow, Coleman and Savard, all of whom are going to be leaving in the offseason :)

Nick Paul brings everything that Tampa will be missing in Goodrow, once Goodrow walks in the offseason.

Unlike Goodrow, Nick Paul can also play centre, take face-offs and has a cap hit of under 700k in this trade.

Also, he scored the gold medal winning goal in OT for Canada at the World Championships, so there's a very good possibility he'll be a clutch player in big games.

Furthermore, it will allow Tampa to bury a player with a higher cap hit.

Paul might even re-sign in Tampa to a team-friendly deal if Tampa three-peats :D

This is the exact same template as the Goodrow trade with the Sharks, only Tampa is not giving up any prospects.

I also managed to get you under the cap for next season while keeping your collection of draft picks mostly intact.

You're welcome.

Your friend,

Sensonfire :D

Tampa could have asked San Jose to take on Johnson when they traded for Goodrow.

But it didn't happen.

What a shocker :/

Nick Paul alone isn't getting a first, and you guys need a fairly upper end C. Take out the third round pick and take Johnson instead.

Goodrow alone wasn't supposed to get a first either.

But you know what?

It happened.

Also, I find it interesting that most people attacking this trade between Ottawa and Tampa have the word "Toronto" written in their profile.

Trades happen that I disagree with all the time.

Mark Stone to Vegas is one of them.

But they still happened.

Whatever man. Doesn't make sense that the Sens would trade Paul and his value isn't high enough to be worth a first, neither does he slot into the top-6.

All of those are wrong.

Avs and Tampa were both offering a first, Leafs needed girt, and he slotted onto the top line.

Regardless, I'm sure it worked out for all parties involved.

I imagine Tampa passes on this deal. While they will need to fill out a lot of their bottom 6, they have ample options in Syracuse to do so, namely Joseph, Stephens, Barre-Boulet, Raddysh, Katchouk. The first being moved is extra unlikely given we almost certainly need to use it to convince a team to take Tyler Johnson.

Just an FYI when using the Goodrow trade as a baseline, Goodrow had 1.5 years left and was a player specifically targeted due to his style of play, cap hit, term, and role. Goodrow wasn't being shopped by the Sharks, the first was used to convince them to trade him. So using the Goodrow comparison on a player the Sens are looking to move anyways doesn't really work

There's always the possibility Tampa passes.

I'm not dismissing that.

However, Paul brings everything that Tampa will be missing with Goodrow next year + Paul can play centre and take faceoffs.

Also, Ottawa's retaining half of Paul's salary and his cap hit with the Lightning would be under 700K.

Great value for Tampa.

If paying a 1st for Goodrow and a 3rd worked out for Tampa, paying a 1st for Paul at 50% salary retention and a 3rd could as well.

Nick Paul isn't being shopped by Ottawa and we're not looking to move him, but a low 1st/high 2nd will be needed to convince them to let him go.

Also, this post proves that Tampa doesn't need to pay a 1st for another team to take Johnson.

You wouldnt be getting anything back in the trade if it was Johnson and a 1st that Tampa was trying to move lol

Then those are two completely different things. A Johnson cap dump nets you "future considerations" and starts with a 1st+. 3 years left a 5m is starting to look a lot worse with the way his play is declining...

The Paul trade on the other hand is trying to give Tampa a very physical and effective third line player, one of the best penalty killers in the league with almost zero salary attached to him. Youre adding to the team without taking on salary which potentially means you can still fit Johnson in.

Also Coleman was worth two 1sts because of the impact that he has in the bottom 6 combined with the fact that hes signed for so little. Goodrow was the exact same thing as well, it cost a 1st because he brings a lot to the bottom 6 while barely making any money against the cap. This Paul trade is just following the template that Tamps has laid out for a bottom 6 acquisition.

Tampa will likely keep Goodrow, so no need for this trade from that angle. If they are willing to deal with Seattle to have them take McDonagh, they could also keep one of Coleman or Savard, possibly both depending on how well Brisebois can negotiate. Even if McDonagh is kept, Goodrow has a pretty good chance of staying, so yeah, Tampa likely passes here. Savard was most likely going to be just a rental(unless Brisebois had already decided that McD was going to be dealt to Seattle in a deal, doubtful but possible), and Coleman was going to be priced out unless either McD is gone or they trade both Palat and Killorn(again not likely).

Most likely Savard and Coleman walk, Tampa deals with Seattle to take Johnson, and trades Palat for the beat deal they can get. Goodrow is kept and the team moves on with a couple of their better Syracuse guys on offense, and the hope that Foote is able to play at least 3rd line minutes with Serg next season(but with the realistic plan that both Schenn and Ben Thomas will be available on the right if Foote struggles/injuries happen).

Not that Tampa wouldn't have any interest in Paul, but they will likely need the '22 1st in another deal involving Johnson, McD, or both if there's a bigger deal brewing. Replacing Coleman with him would be interesting, but probably not at the cost of Tampa's 1st in '22.
