Chucky-gritty-ness

Description
Overpays for UFAs to be contendy and gritty in the 2 year window NYR has before having to 'pay the kids.' The Coleman contract the most extreme example - he would probably get 4x4 on the market, so 6x2 is an attempt to get him for less term. Purpose of roster is to think about what 'hard to play against' might look like w/good players. This will be scary a year out when Fox, Zibanejad, and Tkachuk are up for raises, and how potential bonuses would map on to a limited amount of accrued cap space has not been mapped out. Shesterkin contract may be a bit light as well.

ETA - many thanks for the comments that illustrate the purpose of this AGM, that 'hard to play against' w/good players will be difficult for NYR to manage this summer, and even more so a year out. Will be interesting to see what compromises are made in terms of balancing longterm flexibility, quality of roster, and *grit.*

Détails additionnels:
NYR giant overpay because of wanting the top six skill+grit+fight combination. Flames have no desire to do this, so offer has to be way too good to refuse.

everyone always overlooks the "BONUSES" .. You have to leave $6,800,000 of cap space to cover the Bonuses. just saying.

I’m a fan of the Strome move from MINs perspective for the exact reason you stated. There are other options they need to vet out first, but with moves like this being feasible, it would be a travesty if they send Rask out to be a 1C again.

How far away is Rossi from making the NHL?

Well that's the X factor. Nobody really knows. He was largely considered to be one of the more NHL ready prospects in his draft class, but then he got Myocarditis as a result of having COVID. He was completely down and, up until very very recently, has been unable to do any type of physical conditioning or exercise for quite some time now. A very conservative approach would be 2 years, 1 year in the AHL seems most likely, and anything sooner is probably exceeding expected timelines. That's a somewhat bearish outlook, but I think most would agree.

What you seem to be neglecting in all this is even IF by some miracle CGY decides to trade Tkachuk, what are you going to do the following year when contracts need to be resigned?

Zibanejad and Fox are free agents, along with Kravtsov. Furthermore, Tkachuk's qualifying offer HAS to be at least 9mil per year.

Youll have about 17 million in cap space to resign the 4 of them. Good luck.

Maybe get a stop gap center like Strome until Rossi is ready. Or get Eichel

Stop gap like strome probably makes the most logical sense. Buys you time to assess what to expect from Rossi and when you can expect it. But there’s a good bit of info coming out of MINs beat writer Russo that suggests Kap won’t sign long term if we don’t get a legit plan together for the 1C spot. Meaning, stop gap might not be feasible if we don’t want Kap to walk.

Better off getting Eichel then. Or trading for Kuznestov

No you don’t. Bonuses are allowed to go 7.5% I believe over the cap. Anything ABOVE that needs to be available in free cap space to avoid a penalty next year
