Description
A couple years back, the Marlins put Stanton on the Trade Block. A big Slugger who had a significant injury history, but still put up big #'s when he played.

The main reason for this was that they signed him to a huge Contract that they realistically could never afford as time went on.

While they had deals in place with the Cardinals and Giants, Stanton used his NTC. He specifically wanted to play in the Bronx. And despite the fact that they received nothing in return, the Marlins allowed the Yankees to swoop in and steal him, just to get his money off the books.

At 1st, Yankee fans rejoiced. They got a former MVP for pennies on the dollar. Took clear advantage of Miami. How could this not be a Win?

Fast forward to now. Stanton continues to constantly get injured. So much so that he doesn't even play the field anymore. He never comes through in the clutch. And while he will ultimately get worse as he ages, his albatross Contract could eventually prevent them from resigning one of their younger players, or another FA.

Even while giving up nothing, the trade actually has hurt the Yankees more. And I find this a direct comparison to the Eichel situation.

He is a tremendous player at an important position. But an expensive one ($10M Cap hit), with a potentially serious injury.

Given the state of the Sabres franchise, many think this is the Offseason he gets moved. Not only to let another team deal with his neck problems, but to do so before his NTC kicks in (and he blocks potential suitors the way Stanton did).

Some believe his injury will tone down the potential package it will take to acquire him, and maybe it will. But even if it did, and it turns out the neck injury is more compromising than expected, what good is a $10M injured player in the middle of the lineup? One who not only can't perform to his Contract, but whose Contract could force them to shed some young guns as they come off their ELC's.

If some think I am reaching a bit with this comparison, then so be it. But as soon as his medical issues came out, it immediately popped into my head.

Even if they find a trade package that works for them, I wouldn't pull the trigger with that level of uncertainty. Between the Contract and the potential medical issues, NYC doesn't need another Giancarlo.

Rangers don’t even fit the sabres needs in terms of prospects so he wasn’t going to be a Ranger regardless.

Hahaha oh boy. Interesting comparison but I don’t think it will be the case. This would be great for us if it was, even if he missed most of the seasons on LTIR and only showed up for playoffs a la TB style. Pipedream for sure but funny

Lol the team with the top 3 prospect pool doesn't meet the prospect needs of the worst team and worst prospect pool in hockey? You literally need EVERYTHING lol. Also, if LA Kings are truly out on the Eichel, the price to acquire him is falling like a lead balloon. I ll be generous. Lundqvist, Strome and the 15 OA.

Look at the sabres prospect pool of defenseman it’s good. The only have a couple good forward prospects. Rangers only have one with Pajuniemi. You can’t replace Eichel with defensive prospects.

It takes 5 minutes to see the sabres strengths with their prospects and it’s defenseman. Rangers don’t really have any high end forward prospects. Which is a huge need for the sabres.

Pretttttty big stretch to compare a contract that will cost the Yankees approximately $265 million (Marlins covered $30 mil) through a players age 38 season, to a player who will be paid $50 mil through his age 30 season, no? There's also no salary cap in baseball. Stanton has also had 3 relatively healthy seasons out of the 12 that he's played (whereas this is Eichel's first major injury).

the Rangers finished in the top 16 in points this season.
they had over $17M in dead cap and the youngest team in the league by almost a full year.
i'd say their chances of making playoffs next year is pretty good...

it's not good, it may be classified as sufficient.
the Rangers have one of the best prospect pools in the NHL and the player you identify is LP, come on guy...

His injury history might not be as extensive, but there has still been plenty of uncertainty about this particular one.

If they acquire him, and the injury lessens his ability, it won't matter how young he is. A liability is a liability.

And yes, there is no Cap in baseball. Only the luxury tax. While that would give the Yankees some maneuverability with Stanton (if they chose to go over), the Rangers don't have that option. They are stuck with a hard cap, which is also a Flat Cap for the near future. Harder to work around.

Who else has put up impressive point totals? Certainly not Kravtsov. It’s really not a fit. I don’t understand why it has been so hyped up for a long time.

I strongly disagree but it’s pointless for us to have this debate now. It’s safe to say that everyone outside of NYR fans would say we have 0 chance and will miss playoffs so if/when we make it, we will be loud about it.

Most good prospects put up good numbers. And Krastov hasn't dome that in the AHL. KHL or in the NHL.

i mean, if Sabre players were worth everything you are asking for in trades, they should just be a playoff team...

Sure, but it's pretty simple to look at Stanton's contract and know that even before the trade that he had negative surplus value. Assuming 1 WAR=$8 mil, Stanton would have to put up an average of 3.7 WAR over the duration of the remaining 10 years of his contract to be worth exactly zero (Which, considering that baseball's regression curve is pretty accurate) would have been a pretty huge stretch to get to.

I also feel like there's a lot less risk with Eichel's injury than there is when it comes to acquiring prospects. Everyone (Everyone!) overvalues their prospects, and 90+ percent of them never come close to reaching their ceiling.

The argument that Eichel's cap hit may not make sense long term for the Rangers isn't something that I'd disagree with, but comparing him to Stanton isn't fair IMO.

Friendly piece of advice, don't expect to be taken seriously if you think New York's "only" good forward prospect is a C-grade prospect.
And from reading the further comments you wrote, all you clearly care about is points. Take Julien Gauthier while you're at because he tore up the AHL!

All I’m saying is good prospects usually put up points. Krastov hasn’t. Analytically he struggled in the NHL too.

Then you don't know how to evaluate prospects. Dylan Cozens had 0.31 PPG this season, is he a bad prospect too? No.
