God forbid u lose a third line centre, a backup goalie, and an ok d prospect for a year of a #1 dman, who you'll probably be able to resign. This favours the penguins in terms of the players coming back, and the leafs get much needed cap space. Not sure how you think this is terrible lol, maybe the 1st is too much.

Pens likely wouldn’t be able to re-sign him with the flat cap. Even if we were to trade one of MP or Matheson. Malkin, Letang, Rust, Kapanen, Carter will all have expiring contracts that year. Plus who knows what ZAR, Blueger, and any other FA we sign will cost. Then we’d go out to FA and likely have to spend more on a backup than DeSmith costs. We’d have to get another top 6 winger in FA that likely costs more than Rust. And not entirely sure on who Seattle would take. Too many factors to give up all of those long-term assets for a short term one.

Pens don't touch that trade.

For an overrated but good defenseman and a pretty garbage goalie prospect.
