Id rather have Andersson. Him and Hanifin already have Chemistry in the chance they have 1st pair next year. I don't think we need Seth

In this scenario the Flames lose Giordano to Seattle in the Expansion Draft, that's a gaping hole to fill.

That gaudreau trade is terrible for calgary, the flames very easily decline and the Columbus trade is also terrible for calgary, so that flames very very easily decline both

So what you're saying is that losing your #1 dman who also happens to be your captain on a non-playoff team is 'not really' a gaping hole?

Who do you see taking Gio' 23 minutes a game?

Considering you traded Monahan, retained $3M, for Newhook and two 3rd round picks. I'm not exactly worried about your opinion.

Yeah it’s not really a gaping hole. Hanifin will take on more minutes and the role of the team’s best D, he already was this year. Valimaki will get a look in the top 4 but I imagine we bring in a 4/5 guy (like de Haan from Chicago or something) to support that. Gio will be phased out fairly easily I’d imagine.

So Valimaki goes from being a healthy scratch for a number of games to being in the Flames top 4? And somehow this is going to move the team forward?

'Gio will be phased out fairly easily I'd imagine' is usually what coaches, GMs and scouts alike say about #1 dmen.

Any chance you can let me know which strain of weed you're smoking?

Gio was at best the 3rd best defensmen this year hanifin and Tanev were both way better and andersson was as good if not better this year, valimaki can easily do what gio does

Do I "think" Giordano was better than Hanifin and Tanev individually this past season? Yes. But that's merely my personal opinion.

So...let's take a look at the stats.

Giordano led the teams defense in the following statistical categories, Goals, Assists, Points, Shots on Goal, Shooting %, GWG, PPG, Hits, Blocked Shots and Time On Ice

Tanev led the teams defense in +/- and SH Time On Ice with 3:07 per game followed closely by Girodano at 3:03 per game.

Hanifin DID NOT lead the team in a single statistical category, he did however have more PIMs than Giordano. 18 to 14.

Now some may argue that Tanev is a better defender than Giordano and that's a valid discussion, but Tanev definitely isn't a better all around defensemen as he doesn't skate as well as Gio, nor does he have the offensive upside. This is backed up by the fact that Tanev averaged 12 SECONDS of PP Time On Ice.

Hanifin makes a great partner for Tanev as he is more of 2 way defender, leaning more towards the offensive end of the ice, therefore complimenting one another's style. Looking at Hanifin' PP Time On Ice and SH Time On Ice at 46 and 30 seconds respectively, this tells me that both coaching staffs (Ward and Sutter) didn't feel the need to play him on either first unit as there were better options. Even Stone, Mackey, Nesterov and your boy Valimaki who 'can easily do what gio does' all averaged more SHTOI than Hanifin.

If in fact Hanifin and Tanev were better than Giordano, one would think that the 'professionals' within the organization might make a push for their ice time to be increased???

Or were saving them for the playoffs...
