Do I "think" Giordano was better than Hanifin and Tanev individually this past season? Yes. But that's merely my personal opinion.

So...let's take a look at the stats.

Giordano led the teams defense in the following statistical categories, Goals, Assists, Points, Shots on Goal, Shooting %, GWG, PPG, Hits, Blocked Shots and Time On Ice

Tanev led the teams defense in +/- and SH Time On Ice with 3:07 per game followed closely by Girodano at 3:03 per game.

Hanifin DID NOT lead the team in a single statistical category, he did however have more PIMs than Giordano. 18 to 14.

Now some may argue that Tanev is a better defender than Giordano and that's a valid discussion, but Tanev definitely isn't a better all around defensemen as he doesn't skate as well as Gio, nor does he have the offensive upside. This is backed up by the fact that Tanev averaged 12 SECONDS of PP Time On Ice.

Hanifin makes a great partner for Tanev as he is more of 2 way defender, leaning more towards the offensive end of the ice, therefore complimenting one another's style. Looking at Hanifin' PP Time On Ice and SH Time On Ice at 46 and 30 seconds respectively, this tells me that both coaching staffs (Ward and Sutter) didn't feel the need to play him on either first unit as there were better options. Even Stone, Mackey, Nesterov and your boy Valimaki who 'can easily do what gio does' all averaged more SHTOI than Hanifin.

If in fact Hanifin and Tanev were better than Giordano, one would think that the 'professionals' within the organization might make a push for their ice time to be increased???

Or were saving them for the playoffs...
