Ottawa is still awful, they don’t need Hertl. Why not find a trade to move Hertl for Kuznetsov if that’s your endgame?

sens would probably go for a deal like that value-wise but I don’t think they consider moving JBD at this point, he looks like chabot’s long term partner which is more important. If you replaced him with thomson and another pick they’d do this

Caps pass. They already have a Burns in Carlson. If you want to talk about Hertl+ for that package we can though.

Ottawa is of little concern to me as the San Jose 'Armchair GM'. They may not need Hertl, but it would be prudent to have some level of veteran leadership as the kids grow and learn to be pros. Moving out Burns and Hertl is an attempt to spread the money around, both positionally and with younger players as SJ is in full rebuild.

Value wise, Hertl for that package is fair, but the sharks would be better off holding onto Hertl unless they are tanking

They may very well have a Burns in Carlson, but that didn't stop SJ from acquiring Erik Karlsson, why would it stop Washington? Brent Burns makes the Capitals top 4 much more intimidating and hard to play against, I'd think that'd be something of value when playing the Penguins, Bruins, Lightning, Panthers or Canes come playoff time.

I moved Hertl to avoid losing him to Free Agency for nothing in 2022.

And it didn't work out for SJS at all. Not smart to have 2 elite offensive dmen on the same team, at least the same hand. This doesn't really help Caps all that much, especially when it includes a future top 5 goalie for cheap.

I personally don't see Samsonov cracking a top 5 list of goalies in the next decade, maybe a top 10 list.

Yeah, having 2 dmen who can eat up 25 minutes a night while making solid plays out of their own end is foolish, what ever was I thinking. Tampa should probably start looking to move on from one of Hedman or Sergachev in that case.

Sammy is going to be top 5. Dude is so good. Well if he can stop breaking Covid protocol that is.

Hedman and Sergachev are two way defensemen. Karlsson and Burns are all offense, same would go for Carlson and Dumba.
