I agree. I thought about it for awhile, and I just can't see a team taking him straight up. I believe very much in Ghost, just not in the Flyers system. They'll be strapped for cash 21-22 if they land a big name RD this summer, so have to overpay a bit to shed the cap imo.

Detroit have huge problems on defense especially LD. They only have an aging, and injury prone, DeKeyser and an unreliable Cholowski signed for next year. There are good prospects in the pipeline but they won't be ready for a few years yet. There are solutions available in FA at reasonable cost so it's not unsolvable but Gostisbehere with salary retained and a term that is absolutely perfect to let the prospects get ready, and to top it up a free pick - Yzerman will jump on that deal.

I don't see the retention being a big deal it's 2 seasons and the extra $1.5M isn't going matter with the cap space Detroit is going to have. Plus he does fill a need for Detroit.

It's icing on the cake.

It could come into play insofar as it puts Gostisbehere at a similar cap-cost as any FA signing that has to be made if Detroit don't get him. That could then make him easier to trade when his contract is up (assuming Johansson and Viro et al are ready to take over).

With the salary retention I'd throw in Malte Setkov to clinch the deal.

There's no blue-chipper in that Jones trade, therefore it's not going to work.
