Gotta realize also...he has a NMC- so I doubt he accepts to waive to go to a team with little intent to extend him....this could change come TDL if he has the opportunity to go to a team with a legit chance at a cup run- that of course, gets messy if the Rangers are in playoff contention. My guess is that NYR will try to extend him for 5 yrs...the # will be high enough to make most NYR fans scream- but will be about 5ooK- 1M less than what he'd get on the market...If this "discount" can't be worked out now- then they'll ask for a list of teams he'd waive his NMC for and try to work out a deal where they get back a package a bit more generous than the trade here....and if nothing comes to fruition they'll kick the can down the road to TDL...and if they do move him in the midst of a playoff push they can justify by pointing out he was gonna go UFA and leave (unlike the Tavares fiasco).
