They are just smarter than to say otherwise.
They don't like each other. They tolerated each other to play for Russia. That doesn't mean they like each other.

Malkin HATES Kuzy not Ovi.... they are friends or friendly. NHL isnt the NBA so no tummy sticks but if you were to say "Ovechkin is joining the team" not 1 person would so "no thanks"

I don't think I've ever seen the two of them together for anything. Not training, social media nothing.
So I think it's hard to say they are "friends." MacKinnon and Crosby are friends, they train together etc... I odn't think there is any part there to suggest that.
I think they tolerate each other, as they both know they have to play for team russia. That doesn't mean they like each other, it just means neither say it. Given the crap that happens on the ice between these two teams, you'd be hard pressed to say these two are even friendly. I don't think they want to be around each other a full season. I think both realize that would just make things worse. Both guys want the puck. I don't think either wants to give it up for the other. Malkin already has to deal with being on the same team as Crosby, I don't think he wants to deal with that too.
This is something fans assume that they'd want to play together. I think it's different as the player.
