Description
Not happy with Hextall`s comments today. They seem to be miraged by the Pens recent hot streak. This team has a legit shot at the Cup with the right moves. They also have an issue with picks/prospects and the salary cap. All of the above can be fixed only ONE way.

Trading a good, young top 4 dman (MP) that is stuck playing a role that he isn`t built for to a team that can utilize him better in exchange for rentals. This fixes issues with the salary cap, expansion draft and also sets the team up MUCH better for a cup run. This is very likely this cores last great chance. Literally every way you look at it this is the way to go.

Today I am going to do a 3 way trade that would be beneficial to everyone IMO.

Also a trade with Det.

He actually isn`t. He would run your PP the rest of the year. He was just extremely improperly used in Pitt. Never got a real shot and when he would start to get in a groove he got hurt.

woods has had one good year his whole career. 1, this year.
you don't trade MP for that. And you certainly don't want away from moving him with only Getzlaf to show for it.
That's just horrible asset management.

Two responses for that.

1. Analytically, Staal and Stecher have been a top 3 defensive pairing this year. Staal and Marino would probably be even better.

2. Analytics aside, he brings size, toughness and net-front clearing ability to a team that desperately needs it. Marc Staal would play the bottom pairing, PK, physical role better than MP.

I think getzlaf is good but i do not want a 35 yr old player we already have to many older players. i want younger players that can help us win now

I don`t disagree. This spot could also be Gaudreaus who the Pens brass love thus far. Also possible they bring in someone else but I think they are happy with that they have depth wise right now so.

How does this help the Pens though? Marc Staal has been one of the leagues worst defensemen for like 5-6 years. He gets caved in nightly. Getzlaf can't keep up in this system. His offensive production is shot too. At least Wood can skate, I'd rather keep him if we made a trade.

If you are moving Pettersson to get a forward the D from Detroit you want is Merill. He is cheap and a great defender down low. Has been for some time too.

Getzlaf will help us win now more than any young player available. Also, any young player with term means we likely lose him in the expansion draft anyways unless we expose McCann or Rust. Like Hextall said today, any move they make will be a rental because of cap issues and expansion draft.

why are you trying for wood and getzlaf? this is my opinion, i really want them to get barbashev and blais and claim merkley. i think those three players would be amazing for our team. what are your thoughts. what do you think it would take to get blais and barbashev

Marc Staal actually isnt that bad. They said the same thing about Ceci. How has that worked out?

And actually, if you look at it analytically (which I don`t put much value in) then he has been one of the best defensive dmen in the league this year.

http://www.moneypuck.com/lines.htm

Getzlaf can play in this system. This team has plenty of speed. They need some size and physicality and they are quite open about their need for that. Also, he vastly improves the PP and gives them a dependable RH faceoff guy.

With Staal on the ice, the Red Wings are at 43.86xGF% (evolving hockey). The number is even lower on money puck at 37.3%, which is third worst on that team.

No idea where you are getting that him and Stecher are a top 3 d pairing. On Money Puck, that pairing is on the ice for 2 expected goals per 60 minutes (which is pretty decent), but only 1.56 expected goals for, which is quite bad.

Marc Staal is absolutely not an upgrade over MP. There are much better options out there.

I don`t know if St Louis is going to be selling and if they do they probably won`t do it unless they get a premium return. I do like Blais.

I just think Getzlaf fits better for what they are looking for. RH C, PP specialist, experience, tough/big.

I am not saying MP is better than Staal. I am saying that this deal helps this team for a number of reasons.

1. Salary cap next offseason is a mess if MP is not moved
2. Allows Getzlaf or other upgrades for a playoff run without moving our limited future assets
3. Marc Staal and Troy Stecher have the 3rd best xGA/60 in the league. MP brings more offensively but we don`t need that. Marino, Matheson and Letang all bring plenty of offense. We need a big, tough, physical D to play on the 3rd pair with Marino. To kill penalties, to clear the net front. Marc Staal is superior to MP in that role.

Once again I think you have an extremely flawed thought process on valuating hockey players and the realities of managing a hockey organization so I don`t think what you said is true at all.

Terrible asset management would be to trade our limited futures away right now only to have to trade away MP in the offseason for futures even further down the line that would never help this team win a Stanley cup in their window. Trading MP right now for current players allows us to keep our limited assets while also improving the team and giving us better flexibility with the cap and the expansion draft.

So, the Penguins are a better team as a result of these moves AND they are better positioned prospect wise, salary cap wise and expansion draft wise. Seems like pretty good asset management while also setting the team up for success right now.

If you disagree, it is because you can`t see the value in Getzlaf and Marc Staal. That would be your fault because in reality those players are highly coveted.

Here, I got the money puck list and sorted by xGA/60

That's not top 3. And you can see that while that pairing is doing a decent job only allowing 2 expected goals per 60, their team is only putting up 1.56 expected goals for. That's bad. Those aren't good results.

On the Detroit Red Wings? You don`t think that would improve on the Penguins? Literally the same thing with Cody Ceci. I said it was a good move. He has worked out GREAT. Same with Matheson. Analytics are extremely flawed. I used one number to appease to you. XGA/60. He is among the leagues elite in that regard. This is because he is a great defensive dman. This is the role he would play on Pitt. It would allow Marino some ice to make plays. He would literally play 10-15 mins a night in a PK, defensive role.

Thankfully, as Burke has publicly stated, analytics are the 3rd tool they use when evaluating a player. A firm 3rd as well. Marc Staal would be a valued acquisition by this team and would do just fine in that role. We aren`t asking him to go end to end or run a powerplay. We are asking him to do what he is good at. Protect the crease, shut down other teams players, play physical, kill penalties, provide leadership. I think he would also be a great fit with Marino.

He isn`t under control for the Penguins. He would be for the Devils. He is gone this summer if he isn`t moved now due to cap reasons with the Pens. Why not use him to make the team better right now? This is probably the last legit shot at a cup with this core.

how is he not under control?
He clearly is, that contract has years on it, and they protect him in the expansion draft. If Seattle wants to take Matheson, be my guest.
I'd much rather lose Matheson than McCann or Blueger.

Him and Stecher are literally the 4th best in xGA on the red wings according to the link you sent. That's not good. You don't win hockey games when your defensemen can't manage 50% in scoring chances. So you can isolate his D numbers, but when you factor in that he is an offense killer, it makes him a negative impact player.

Also, the point on Ceci wasn't that he was terrible, it was that he was terrible when he was forced into a top pairing role. He isn't doing that here and it is allowing him to succeed. But just because one guy has success doesn't mean that another will. Staal is horrible, flat out horrible.

Here's the thing. It's not about what team he's on. In fact, he's been better this year on that bad team than he has been for a long time with the Rangers (a less bad team). But even this improved version of him is a replacement level player.
