Description

I'm proposing this trade more for an understanding of what the Devils needs. From the outside looking it, it appears that Hughes might be best served being the next Patrick Kane on the wing. He's got great vision, playmaking, speed. Can drive up the sides to spread the D a part. He could use a big body net front presence that's also a playmaker. (Trust me, as a Hawks fan I can tell you that the dumbest move I've ever seen the Hawks make, was forcing Kane to center in 2011-2012. god awful.)

Anyway, back to the point. The Hawks have an extra centerman (Dylan Strome) that is a pretty darn good offensive player. He's stuck behind Toews, Dach, and now Pius Suter who's been pretty awesome. I bring this up because from the outside looking it...this would be the perfect scenario for Strome to succeed. He's not going to play the PK. He's an offensive dynamic PP/scoring Center. For a team that's 3rd to last on the PP and 5th in Goals for...I think a 24 year old (and 6 days....happy belated birthday Strome!) on a cost controlled contract AND an RFA could really help NJD in both the short term and the long term. Thoughts?

No, IMO Strome can't play wing. Just trying to be honest. BUT 96 points in 125 games is pretty good. That even includes a stretch where the Hawks tried to play him at wing...not a smart move IMO...and he didn't play well. As a center though he's something like a .82 ppg centerman.

Devils pass then. Hughes, Hischier, Sharangovich, McLeod, Zacha, Merkley, Boqvist, and more are our centers.

Boqvist is interesting because of his last name, but to be honest the hawks have enough middle 6 types like him. I don’t think he is the foundation of a trade for Dylan Strome.

The only thing is...even if Toews doesn't come back. Dach will then be the #1C...and Suter is playing just fine. I'd also sign Soderberg again. He'd be a fantastic #3C with his defensive 1st mentality and can win faceoffs.

That's understandable. But Devils don't need Strome. Other teams (Rangers, Knights, Wild, etc) would be more interested

I liked the idea for Mercer. I'd even add a VERY small piece to make that work. From the outisde looking in, it appears as though Center is a position of need vs winger. Holtz and Foote seem to be the scoring wingers for NJDs future. Toss in Mercer and you have (3)...and Hughes maybe even too. It's far from the worst thing to put an undersized player on the wing. I'm pretty sure he's the smallest center in the NHL, but someone has to be.

I wouldn't trade Mercer for Storme. Devils are very deep at center.
Bratt and Foote/Zacha on the Left.
Holtz and Mercer on the right.

Honestly with the uncertainty of Toews future, I think the hawks should probably just hold onto Strome for the time being.
