Description
With William Nylander being benched last night, is this the start of a Laine-like escapade?

Steve Dangle asked on Twitter, is Nylander a Leaf after this season?

I’m not sure, I’ve been on the fence with the guy for weeks now. He’s EXTREMELY talented and gifted, but he doesn’t work. He’s honestly lazy. Call me your uncle from Etobicoke, but he’s been off. Keefe sees it, I see it, and I’m sure leaf management sees it.

I know he can be good, but he’s not trying. He’s giving up on plays, not forechecking or backchecking, not giving it all like Matthews and Marner do every night.

To me, the difference between Marner and Nylander is Marner always works to get the puck. He wins battles in deep but Nylander just gives up. It’s frustrating. I’m hoping the benching sends a message to him and gets him off the slump and he works hard. The key to success is hard work, and if Nylander doesn’t want it he can leave. I just hope he learns and works, for his sake and the teams sake.

Just for cap reasons, Nylander could be the odd man out this off season.

I refute the notion that Nylander doesn't try/work for the puck/gives up. I think he has been doing those things more than anyone would like lately, which is frustrating, but the vast majority of his tenure with the team, he's been fantastic at winning pucks back (very primarily through stick checks rather than body contact), particularly in the O-zone and neutral ice. I thought he brought a lot more of that last night and I think we saw the results of that, especially in the first period. He looked good, imo. I'm willing to bet he gets back to his normal self.

It's comments like this that I think make players not want to go to TO. Why would anyone want to subject themselves to this microscope of stupidity. Nylander will never be able to win over half of Leafs Nation, he's going to be forever the guy the "we need Grit!" Brian Burke moron crowd will hate on no matter what.

Maybe sometimes he needs a poke in the ribs to get going. Keefe did it, good for him. Seems like a wiser plan than trading him for a 3rd line grinder how hits a lot but doesn't do anything else. "But he's harder to play against!" The usual morons will say, playing from behind is harder to play against and a guy who gets you goals does that more than a grinder.

I hate this ****ing site.

I completely agree. I just want effort, I like the guy as a player I just hate lazy workers in any walk of life. Whether you're a cashier or a hockey player, I hate laziness and always have.

Hes so good he just has to work for it. When he tries and works hard hes so amazing.

Why bring up Laine though? Why go there? It's apples and oranges. Laine didn't like it in Winnipeg. Nylander fought for term so he could stay a Leaf long-term. The 2 situations are nothing alike.

Last night was coaching. Players get benched for 5-10 min stretches all the time. 99% of them don't get traded.

I'm not going to get into the lazy conversation. I think benching/coaching this year is more to get Willy to play less risky/a bit smarter, and not really related to laziness. But I don't care enough about it to argue.
