I don’t think either BUF or WPG does those deals and a big reason is the retention. I still say put Jost at 3C move Compher to wing and you will see more production out of the 3rd line especially with Donskoi on the other wing.

Timmins alone would be enough to get Adam Lowry. The guys is a absolute beast.

Both players BUF/WPG would be retaining on are UFA's, so the retention in real dollars is only 22% of those retention numbers.

This also assumes that those teams are out of it by the deadline, which in Winnipeg's case isn't certain.

Jets aren’t giving up Lowry and a 2nd to get Timmins. They’d rather just move Lowry 50% retained for a late 2nd or 3rd and a prospect. I’m personally not a huge fan of timmins, then you also add a 2nd going to Colorado. Also it’s most likely Jets move Lowry to an Eastern Conference team in case for some reason he decides to stay there.

Lowry (50% retained) for 3rd + prospect is a trade I'd make, depending on the prospect. Who would be of interest for Winnipeg?

Certainly preferable to losing Timmins.

Definitely would benefit both sides more I think. I still think that the Jets avoid moving Lowry to a west team, in case for some reason he does resign there. It’s likely he comes back to wpg regardless of where he goes, but just to be sure.

Honestly I have no clue what the Avs prospects are like, Jets need a solid RD prospect under the age of 20. If you have one that could work, that would be ideal. If they’re too valuable to be included in a trade with a 3rd for Lowry 50% retained Jets would likely try to make it work by sending a pick back. Only reason timmins doesn’t work is because with how our right side is setup right now we don’t need a guy to step in to be a 3rd pairing guy. We need a 1RD, or some younger prospects that are 2-3 years away.

A guy like Barron comes to mind but he’s likely too valuable, but could have picks adjusted to make it work. What’s helleson supposed to look like?

Fair points. A RHD does seem to be Winnipeg's biggest need. I'm not sure Avs would be too keen to move Helleson or Barron though (or Timmins for that matter). Avs are going to need some ELC's pretty soon, and having contingency at RHD for when Johnson winds down is going to be important.

Barron was projected as a top 10-15 pick ahead of the season last year, but his blot-clot issues made him fall to the Avs. They rate him really highly, and Mackinnon already knows him well having skated together. In fact Mackinnon was telling Sakic to draft him.

Helleson would have been the likeliest to get traded if needed, but his performance as USA's best shutdown RHD was impressive, and he's continued that form into his season with Boston College where he recently had a 3 point night and an OT game winner end-to-end.

Sakic knows better than anyone how hard it is to acquire young RHD's, having gone through a decade of having a terrible D where nobody wanted to trade a RHD. That's why he's drafted 4 RHD's with high picks in the last 4 drafts. Needless to say he won't be moving those guys cheaply, if at all.

That’s 100000% fair. The Jets are in the same spot needing a 1RD.
