Pursuing Dubois

Description
I think this deal, in spite of being a heavy premium to pay above Monahan’s value, makes CGY a much better team both immediately and long-term.

And the more I think about it, the more I love how these lines would work. Bennett and Lindholm can split C duty on the 2nd line.

And giving Johnny two physical play driving partners who can produce offense gives him the best chance to find his best level, IMO.

I see this lineup and believe it’s got the depth and makeup to give CGY a real shot at going deeper in the playoffs than with Monahan.

I hear that. I’m always proposing the max price I’d consider paying to get the deal done. I agree this is a substantial premium to pay to acquire Dubois. Any deal that doesn’t include a CGY 1st round pick is a great deal — that’s my take.

I could see Treliving getting a deal done for Monahan + 2021 3rd (EDM), and that would be a great move. Have to think Jarmo has bought himself enough time to earn a slightly higher return for Dubois with the recent contract and a great AAV. Cap savings are valuable.

Tbh this looks solid. I’d say
PLD > Monny

So the first + Killy likely closes the value.

My issue is, I heard Monny sucks defensively. Wouldn’t he struggle under Tortz system?

I wouldn’t say he sucks defensively. He’s worked on that side of his game over the years and has improved. He’s always been in an offensive role though playing with Gaudreau. Solid on face offs. He would be much better defensively playing in a Tortorella or Trotz system.

Might be in the minority but I don't see Dubois being that big of an upgrade over Monahan really, at least right now.

I don't think this trade makes CGY significantly better, but instead it'll create them a huge problem with both Dubois and Gaudreau deals expiring at the same time. Especially if Dubois keeps moaning about playing in too small market team.

Canadian markets are not small markets in the hockey world. Dubois is Canadian and understands that. CLB is a sleepy place to play. A great city to live, but I bought 8th row tickets to a Game 6 playoff game versus WSH a few years back for $70 USD per ticket...

Dubois went to another level we hadn’t seen yet in the playoffs this past year. And if that’s where he’s at this season and beyond, he’s a better impact player than Monahan.

Sure but Monahan is better offensively. IMO they are fairly even in value. From a Flames perspective I would not do this trade and would instead attempt to acquire him with futures to have a ceter for the Tkachuk line

My take is that Dubois would produce 70+ points steadily on a line with Gaudreau and Tkachuk. And I think he’d be a bigger producer come playoff time, while also helping Gaudreau find a better playoff edge. Monahan isn’t bringing any physical toughness when games get tough. Johnny wouldn’t have to worry about much with Dubois and Tkachuk on the ice.

+ How do you think about acquiring Dubois for futures and keeping Monahan on the books?

I hear(d) that, but was asking how you think CGY could do that while navigating the cap. There isn’t space to add the super reasonable $5M AAV this season. So what kind of deal package from CGY are you thinking?

Thats where the issue lies, ive pondered it a few times and even attempted to make a post but I always get stuck on the value and cap space. Without knowing what the Flames may look to do with the expansion draft it gets a little difficult.
