Bad for the rebuilding Leafs. 31 year old and four points this year Bellmare couldn't make the team, no room for 2.3m RW Weise, Laughton has not proved himself to be an NHLer....so that leaves the overpaid Giroux.
Kadri, nice contract if he produces (he has 2 less points this year than Giroux), almost two years of Leafs top scorer JVR, and the Leafs # 1 prospect. More cap, less talent in players, no thank you from Leafs.

First of all, yes the trade is bad, but how is Giroux overpaid? He's a superstar with almost no supporting cast (save for Voracek and Simmonds), so how is he supposed to get everything done? Tavares is the same.

Giroux is the 11th highest paid player in the NHL. His production doesn't match his pay. Kadri plays with Brown and Komarov, so Giroux I'm sure as much support as Kadri. Superstar? he had the makings of one a few years ago, but his play now doesn't put in at that level.

Giroux not a superstar...that's funny. Maybe you should tally up the points from the last 5 years and see where G ends up according to his salary...

That's funny how people go back five years to determine value. I'll take his production for the past 2.5 years and what I think his production will be for the length contract to determine his value.
Superstar is and even star are thrown around rather easily. Tell me DD. During the next five years, where to you think Giroux will rank in in the league as best player.

Giroux is stud. I have no idea what you are talking about. He's a 28 year old captain and has been playing on a somewhat mediocre Flyers team the past couple years so his numbers have taken a hit but he's a true number one center in this league. Not too mention a proven playoff performer. 8M is a lot of money but he gives you a lot too. Sure maybe the 90 pt seasons are finished but the 70-80 are still pretty darn attainable for the duration of his contract or at the very least 4 of his next 6 years. Also Giroux brings some credibility to the Leafs, something Kadri and JVR don't have. Giroux can be your captain until Matthews/Nylander/Marner/Reilly or whoever is ready.

Saying anything less is just ignorant. Kadri is a second line center at best. JVR is only signed for this year and next the UFA, Kapanen is a decent prospect but not a sure thing either, Holland well doesn't even need explanation. Also you're not only getting Giroux. Bellmare is a solid cheap depth guy. So is Weise. Laughton I'm still reserved about because of his injury history but if he stays healthy, could be decent also.

I would think long and hard before dismissing this so easily palhal. This trade gives you a number one center and not one of your true core players was used in the process..... Matthews would benefit from learning from Giroux too.

Marco: I can understand your logic...until you reached for, "He gives the Leafs credibility" Hardly a meaningful statement. The Leafs have been in the NHL for what 100 years, having Giroux doesn't make the franchise any less/more credible. For the purists...Leafs last won the Cup in 67, Flyers 75. Bellmare may be a solid cheap depth LW, but the Leafs have those on LW. Weise? The Leafs have enough RWers too. Funny about Laughton, when I have seen him play the Leafs...well he looks like Ryan Kelser....really good. Apparently he doesn't do much elsewhere surprisingly.
Still the trade really is....JVR, Kadri and the the Leafs # 1 prospect Kapanen. If Giroux is a superstar, because he has elevated his team which is devoid of talent, you could argue the same for Kadri....talk about a less than talented team for the past three years. Want to discuss JVR, Kadri, Kapanen for Giroux OK, but the other four players just muddies the water. And the NMC should have meaning too for a super star.

The trade wouldn't really make sense for the rebuilding Leafs, but nonetheless, Giroux is worth every penny he garners.
