How much will TBL retain

Description
The more I watch Johnson highlights the more I feel
He plays similar to Pavelski but not quite as good
For example most of his goals are on one timers off passes from the D, backhand shots of rebounds and scrambles in front of the net or Tips from point shots.
With two D man like Burns and Karlsson I feel Johnson can be utilized almost exactly how we did with Pav’s and he can be very successful here, and that should be enticing for him to rebound his career and why he accepts a trade to San Jose despite California’s high tax rate.
The key is how much is Tampa willing to retain to get rid of him!!! I have 2 mil here is it more or less?
At 3 mil for the next 4 years I think he is a very positive value.

Maybe a third team does the retention and receives the compensation? But 2M x 4 years would cost a bit.

True and if a 3rd team like Detroit was involved Tampa would have to give up a 1st, the sharks give up a 3rd and a b level prospect and everyone wins then but that is a tall order.

Sharks get Johnson at 3 mil a year For a 3rd rounder and a decent prospect

Detroit -or team to be named later- gets a B level prospect 2 3rd’s and a 1st for losing 2 mil cap space the next 4 years

Tampa gets 5 mil in cap space to sign Anthony. But gives up a 1st and a 3rd

This trade doesn’t really help the sharks or lightning. What would be better is firstly giving Tampa the full cap relief since we can fit a the full brunt of his contract. And secondly we take the full incentive for taking on the full cap - and we still get a player to use on our third line to improve our depth.
This trade doesn’t help either team the way it could.

Tampa would likely prefer to get the contracts off the books and the sharks should rather acquire quality assets for doing so

Tampa is in the worst cap situation ever atleast off the top of my head in the NHL. They need to relieve like 10+ mil to be where they want

The whole point of trading Johnson is to free up Cap space so they can sign their RFAs. Tampa will likely need to trade Killorn too. But JBB isn't retaining anything.

Yea I kinda feel you there but with no one picking him up for free off waivers it’s either retain on him or trade away a plethora of picks.
Either way I’m on if we had to pick up Johnson at full 5mil we would have to trade Sorenson and only have 22 on our active roster, but it’s doable, but then Tampa would have 2 1sts comming our way and that feels like a steal of a deal and makes 3 straight years sharks get their firsts. For taking on a player and giving up Goodrow.

Your right, now do we help them out for a bounty or do we go villain and offer sheet Anthony for 2 years 4.5 and try and swipe their top 2 C out from under them???

Or get super crafty talk another GM in offer sheeting Anthony then we swoop in and try and pluck Killorn or Johnson for a bag of picks so they can resign Anthony.

Or do we start camp as is see how the kids play then if needed pick up a guy like sheary or Duclair or Atheneou.

I think a big reason Doug has done so little this off season is that he is unwilling to take on any significant cap hits with term. Looking forward, Hertl and Ferraro will need new contracts in 2022. The cap won’t be going up and there are no big contracts coming off the Sharks payroll. If he takes someone like TJ, he paints himself into a Tampa like corner in the future. My guess is he’s trying to add a forward with a contract that runs one or two years and a trade like this is a non-starter.

That’s what I thought and I posted a trade of Kane for Pavelski a couple days ago and got lambasted.
My thought we lose 10-15 goals a season between the 2 but Pavs contract is up In 2 years helps us bridge the gap when it comes up and gives us back some leadership we lost.

I love Pavs. I even made sure I was at the Dallas game last year so I could cheer for his return to the tank. However, we all know that contract isn’t going to end well just like we knew Marleau’s contract with Toronto wasn’t going to end well. I think Doug is trying to sign someone like Granlund to a short term deal. Plus, if we are trading with Tampa it should be for Killorn not TJ.

TJ is a better fit though, I know I sound crazy but TJ would fit our system and flourish I see him being a 20+ goal 45 point player most of the final years if he is here, and the Pavelski Kane trade is very very lopsided and favors Dallas but the ability to have 1 contract for a large amount come off the books when 3+!players will Need raises is my sole reason for posting the trade idea.

I agree that I think DW is going to be patient, at least early, like Timo's rookie year. We have a lot of young unknowns, & I think he wants to see which ones step up & are going to be a part of the future going forward.
