I think we should take a drink every time this trade is proposed, and another when the Florida fan says no.

Weegar is gonna sign for like $5Mx2 in arb and finally these trades will be put to bed

I like weegar, but idk, with arb, the expansion draft, and the fact that Holl is literally a decent player - not worth it

Cats wish Weegar would sign for that, he wants at least double that. Easy no from Florida

I read online that the panthers wanted Johnson+Dermott for weager and the leafs said no. I think that would’ve been a better route than signing Brodie tbh

I've heard this from several Toronto fans, particularly vociferously from newbies, and it seems dubious to me. First of all, as you point out, that would have been more to Toronto's advantage than signing Brodie, and second of all, Johnsson plus Dermott isn't likely to turn out cheaper than Weegar plus an entry-level player, so Florida's purportedly financial motivation for moving Weegar isn't there.

It came from Friedman. There was a lot of "I think" in what he said, but usually he wouldn't throw something like that out there unless he was pretty darn sure. Also, assuming Weegar signs for something in the $3.5m range, Johnsson + Dermott would have cost about the same as him alone (not including an extra entry level player) this year, depending on the structure of his deal.

??

Johnsson's cap hit is $3.4 million, and the actual money is irrelevant to Toronto.

It is supposedly relevant to Florida, though. You mentioned that the financial motivation for Florida wouldn't have been there in that deal, but assuming Weegar signs a deal at approx. $3.5m (which is pure conjecture on my part), his cost alone - supposing the structure of his deal similar in cap hit and salary - would be about equal to that of Johnsson and Dermott combined. So when you take into consideration the extra roster spot that Florida would need to fill if they had Weegar as opposed to Johnsson + Dermott for the same cost, the Panthers would save money in that deal.

I highly doubt the out-of-pocket cost of an ELC is a significant factor to Florida, even in their condition. I think that the reason why Florida and Weegar are sticking is that they are at least $2 million apart.

I think I may be confused, here. In your comment that I first quoted, you implied that the rumor about the tabled offer from Florida of Weegar for Johnsson + Dermott seemed suspect, partially due to the fact that the financial motivation wouldn't be there for them in such a deal because Dermott + Johnsson was not likely to be cheaper than Weegar + ELC or similar level contract. I was merely pointing out that it's very possible (maybe even probable) that they would've been.

There's another entirely separate reason why I'm so suspicious about this report: to whose advantage is it to release these details? Certainly not Dubas, who would look like an idiot if Florida gets a much better offer and takes it; Dubas would wait to disclose his rejection until he saw what Weegar actually goes for. And certainly not the Florida GM (I forget his name), who wouldn't want to reduce Weegar's trade value by disclosing what he COULDN'T get for Weegar. In short, both of these GM's would keep their mouths shut unless and until Weegar actually gets traded. Which makes me ask, what source was so close to one GM or the other that he actually knew these details and chose to reveal them to the press? Considering that no Toronto or Florida front-office guy has gotten fired recently, I don't think that these details really come from anyone who was privy to them.

It's not really to anyone's advantage and it doesn't have to be. Sometimes details like this just come out. It happens all the time and people don't generally get fired for it. Guys like Friedman make a living by getting this type of information because they're good at it and they can be trusted to have reliable sources.
