Description
Pretty sure the Isles are going to put Ladd on LTIR. Robidas Island strikes again!

Kesler makes a lot of money to not play- more than twice what Boychuk is making. Throw in some draft picks to sweeten the deal, and I think it's doable. Might not even need the picks. This gives the Isles breathing room to sign their RFAs and UFAs.

Barzal's (last) RFA contract is in line with what other players have gotten, and probably at the high end of that list. Pulock is really good but I think that cap hit and term is good (although negotiable).

I'm of two minds about Athanasiou; He's got talent but he's also got holes in his game. I'd give him a shot on sheltered 3rd line minutes. Signing Hoffman would be nice- it'd push the Isles RWs down and give them real depth across the board. I have him at 2 years, just for his own insurance's sake.

Oh, and before anyone asks, I expect some of their AHL talent to make it up to the majors, but I don't have any major aspirations for them. Bellows, Wahlstrom, and Koivula aren't ready. Ho-Sang and Aho might be, but just so.

Wahlstrom was the 2nd best offensive forward on the isles during his 9 games and he was above average defensively. At some point this organization has to put their prospects in a position to succeed and not bury them in the minors with Brent Thompson until they’re 24 YO.

I'm starting to think Ladd goes to LTIR as well, I think we're desperate enough and they'll be able to "make something up." Or maybe he'll have an actually nagging injury, who knows.

I'd rather not trade more assets than we have to, so if we can comfortably sign Barzal and Pulock with the Ladd money (pretty likely) and also find a taker for Boychuk, I'd stop there and then bring in one of AA, Duclair or Hoffman, not two. I've been pretty vocal about my disinterest in Hoffman, but having him for a year or two wouldn't be the end of the world, he still would be a spark to the PP and probably be a little better offensively next to Nelson or Barzal. I'm more interested in Duclair or AA, they can probably provide better value and you don't have to worry about them regressing due to age. I'd rather just sign one of them and then pocket the cap space for next year.

I'm convinced we're going to make a big run at Hall next offseason

So you'd say no to two prospects and a 2nd because you don't want to part with a third? C'mon.

Wahlstrom's not ready- I'd give him more time in the AHL (or overseas) and work on his overall game. That being said, he's a midseason callup if there's an injury.

Ladd's knees and hips are shot. He was directly responsible for losing Game 2 against the Lightning, and I think he knows he's done. At some point he has to realize that he's taken too much damage to his lower body and it's going to become a quality of life situation. They let him play in the playoffs as a going away present- and even then, only b/c Cizikas got hurt.

Hoffman might be a problem in the locker room if he brings the Karlsson crap with him, but I don't think he will (the Isles are run far too professionally to allow that). He'd be an immediate boost to the 1st line- the kind of player Barzal needs to succeed. It'd also force other teams to focus on the Isles 1st line, and free up more matchups for their 2nd and 3rd lines. I also don't have an issue with the Isles keeping Hoffman for 1 year and then transitioning to Hall after this season. Duclair or Athanasiou have value, but if the Isles get the 1st line guy they need, they only need one of them.

That's a terrible trade for Isles as is. They'd at most attach a 3rd to Komarov's deal.

Wahlstrom was above average defensively when he was with the isles. He’s definitely ready and his skill set is one that we need badly , especially on the PP.

The isles likely won’t sign any UFAs besides Martin and Greene , which means they’ll have to go with internal improvements.

Hoffman has been on the decline for the past two seasons and provides no value at even strength - staple doesn’t think trotz would put him on the 1st line considering he’s one of the worst defensive forwards in the league. He’s is a powerplay specialist.

I wanted to move out Komarov's contract and make it worth their while. Bellows, after his PED suspension has bleh value on his own. Ishakov is a unknown. The draft pick seals the deal. I could go for Komarov and a 2nd for the 3rd and see if it works.

Bellows is still a good prospect and Iskhakov is no chopped liver. 3rd round pick at best. If they wanna get stingy, just waive him.

The Panthers weren't exactly GOOD on defense as it is, so that might be a symptom of the way the team played. Isles desperately need a PP specialist as it is. I'd give him a shot for at least 1 year. It's not like there's any other UFA who could elevate the Isles offense- Granlund? Haula? Soderberg? Alt idea would be to consider a Parise trade.

Even going back to his Ottawa days, his defensive metrics were awful. He likes to play a free wheeling style and he actually hurts his team offensively and defensively at even strength. He’s a powerplay specialist because of his shot and he doesn’t even move much - he played on a star studded powerplay with Dadonov , barkov . And huberdeau who found ways to get him the puck.

I doubt we’ll have any extra money to spend on UFAs. . I think there’s a good chance bellows gets moved , for whatever reason the organization isn’t high on him. Wahlstrom needs to be given every shot to make the roster. The isles need to get rid of the learning curve on wahlstrom and allow him to work his way into the top 6. His shot is just as good as Hoffman’s, he can help on the PP immediately and he has what it takes to play in trotz demanding system.

Dude Yzerman already said that he's not parting with picks, Especially 3rd round picks at best you'd get future considerations just like the Rangers.

I think the only reason why the Isles haven't yet made any moves is because they're waiting to see who they could trade. As a result, the Isles have likely handed multiple contract offers based on those outcomes and have handshake agreements based on it. I like Wahlstrom but I just think it's rushed.
