Description
Brodie
This move makes sense for the leafs. He is a much cheaper option then AP and can be very effective. His one issue is his health which the leafs take a chance on here. Seems like a perfect pairing which lets Rielly be “the guy” on the back end still as a 1a.
Shattenkirk
He takes his veteran experience and newly found cup experience to the leafs to pair with Muzzin. He slots perfectly in on the second pairing PP and gets to take another run at the cup as the leafs will almost be a guarantee for the playoffs for the next few seasons.
Andersen Trade
Leafs look to find a cheaper alternative on a 1 year deal (so expansion draft doesn’t steal a goalie) and a tandem in net. Leafs include Dermott as the left side in Toronto is set for the foreseeable future. Gauthier is a throw in as a depth player who I have heard some teams around the league are interested in. Leafs acquire Mrazek to pair with Campbell and gives him the year to stand up or shut up. Jake Bean is the prospect coming to Toronto here and instantly steps in as the “first in” D in case of injuries. Jordan Martinook steps in as a depth player and slots in perfectly on the leafs 3rd line. Also on a 1 year deal to earn his next contract. Carolina gets a bonafide starter in Andersen and gets the opportunity to resign him in the future and can use their 13th selection on a position player instead of possibly investing in Askarov.

Johnsson trade
Minnesota is looking for more skill and they find it here with Johnsson. He is coming off a rough year with injuries but definitely has top 6 scoring potential. Don’t like for the leafs to lose him here but due to the cap, he is a causality as he has value. Engvall is a capdump/depth player here and with Minnesota shedding salary, they could easily afford him. Leafs get Hartman back from Minnesota and adds some grit to the leafs lineup while being able to play anywhere in the bottom 6. Also on a 1 year contract so can earn his next payday and seems like a fit with the leafs. Minnesota adds a pick to the deal to offset the skill Toronto is losing.

Mrazek - not needed
Been - not needed
Martinook - not needed
Hartman - not needed

... why would Toronto give up any value for players not needed at all?

Hartman would be a good fit as a relatively cost controlled guy that brings that physical touch. The Wild don’t have interest in Johnsson but I think they could be trade partners at some point in the year.

Canes decline. I don’t think they would move bean and a 2nd in the Andersen deal. The two other players going back to the canes have no value to the canes. The only player the canes would have interest in is Andersen. The canes counter with a 2nd and a 3rd for Andersen or mrazek and a 2nd.
