i think thats too far for them to trade down if the prize is strome.

It'll take a LOT more than that to trade up from 17 to 5. And Askarov likely isn't available at 17 regardless

IMO strome is worth a 1st somewhere around 15th OA. That plus 46th OA seems like a fair offer to move up 12 spots. You've got a point that askarov might not be there at 17 but Ottawa has plenty of ammo to go back up a few spots

45oa last year bumped 14oa up to 11oa (Arizona trading up to get Soderstrom). By that template, 46oa bumps 17oa up 3 spots to 14oa. I really don't think Strome is worth a mid-1st, but even if he was, that +14oa still wouldn't be enough to trade up to 5oa. Sens are likely only moving 5oa if they stay in the top 10 and add an extra top 25 pick.

17th OA + 47th OA + Strome doesn't move you up 12 spots and forget Askarov being their at 17th OA doubt he gets past Carolina at 13th OA.

I agree with the first part but Strome is certainly worth a mid 1st and the Hawks shouldn't take a mid first for him anyway. Since joining the Hawks 2 seasons ago, at the age of 21 and 22 (he turned 23 at the end of last season, Strome has been a .76ppg player. 23 year old 2C, former #3OA pick, finally getting the right coaching and development from Chicago, plenty of upside and already putting up .76ppg...not a chance I would trade that for a mid 1st rounder (15th or 16th OA). The chance of a mid 1st rounder becoming a player like Strome statistically is just not good. First rounders have a 33% of becoming a fulltime NHL player. In this draft the chance of a mid 1st becoming a fulltime NHL player is high due to the depth of this draft but the chance a player like Zary or Holloway becomes a 2C at the age of 21 isn't great. I would rather keep the bird in hand so to speak knowing we already have a 2C with even more upside then gambling on a player like Zary or Holloway.

Fans, especially here, tend to rate draft picks much higher then the reality. I get top 10 or top 12 picks having a lot of value, but middle of the draft and later is a pretty big crap shoot on what teams will end up with. This draft is pretty deep into early 2nd round, but still there is far from a sure thing a team drafting at #15 or #16 will get a player that ends up better then Strome.

If the Hawks were to do this, I would draft either Raymond or Sanderson

Sanderson at 5 would be a reach. I really like Raymond though but I think he might go at 4 to detroit. Raymond will be BPA for Detroit imo if that’s how they decide to draft
