Was on pace for 30 goals this season (factoring in a full season prorated) and is a .55ppg playoff career player. He is worth a 1st all day. That doesn't even mention that he is a top 20 two way player that is a PP and more importantly PK specialist also. I'm not sure he's worth a 1st and a 2nd, but a 1st and add a okay prospect or 3rd if half retained on his salary

Personally id say a 2nd and a prospect is how I value him but i could maybe see a team doing a late first or something

Hawks won't move him for a 2nd and a prospect unless the prospect is a very good one. Hawks likely only trade Saad at the TDL, maximizing his return given his strong career playoff numbers, if the Hawks are out of the playoffs and teams will offer a late 1st plus a role player or prospect at that time given historical comparisons.

I'm usually right with you on virtually all of your comments, but I think you're ignoring the Kapanen trade. If a 23-year-old who hasn't reached his peak yet can fetch the 15th overall, last year's second-rounder and a bottom-6 roster forward, Saad is worth a first plus, too even if Pittsburgh overpaid dramatically.

@etpeck

Saad:
19/20 - 21 goals (on pace for 30 goals in a regular 82 game season)
18/19 - 23 goals
17/18 - 18 goals (was battling injuries half the season)
16/17 - 24 goals
15/16 - 31 goals
14/15 - 23 goals
Career - .59 ppg, .29gpg

I think it's pretty clear he's not just a 20 goal guy and those stats are far better then Kap (.44ppg, .20gpg) to your point OldNYIfan

I’m not saying saad is a bad player by any means. I just think 6 mil is too much for him. If he was at 4.5 and had more than 1 year left I’d have no problem give up a first. I think we will probably just agree to disagree on it but good discussion for sure. I also may just be undervaluing saad because I just don’t see the canes as a great fit. I feel the canes need more of a 55-60 point guy to drive offense on the second line, and I may be wrong, but I don’t see saad filling that role. Saad has always seemed as more of a complimentary piece for me

In theory, good teams always have a defensive player on their top 3 forward lines. That is who Saad is. He's a power forward 2 way winger that plays all 3 zones and can carry from the defensive zone to offensive zone, strong on the boards, etc. Most of his goals or assists come from the dirty areas around the net or from carrying into the zone and passing off to a winger like Kubalik or Kane who has space. He definitely is not a dynamic offensive winger like a Kane, Matthews, McDavid, etc. or a shooting winger with a big shot.

Agree with all of that, i just think the canes kind of already have that. Jordan staal is fantastic defensively, nino is underrated defensively, and Tuevo has an extremely underrated two way game. The canes may lack a bit of physicality but i think a more dynamic forward to drive the second line is the more pressing need

I kind of agree with that and see your point. Saad would be a good fit in Boston, Vegas, Pitsburgh, Dallas...teams that play a more physical puck possession style of hockey. Saad if fast, can definitely keep up with offensive fast games, but his strengths as a power forward would be best served elsewhere IMO. Maybe I'm wrong as Canes definitely offered a first last TDL for him as reported by plenty of places.

That’s interesting I hadn’t heard of the canes having interest in him previously. I don’t think he would be bad with the canes, he just wouldn’t be the type of player I personally would target
