How I see next year

Description
I would love feedback on the signings/trades.

A few things to say of the start. I dont think the loui contract can be moved. And if it is moves the price starts at a 1st and that isnt worth it especially since the canucks dont have a 1st or 2nd this year. The cap can be cleared another way

Assuming Ferland goes to LTIR or retires

Toffoli was a great fit with the canucks. You should do everything you can to keep him. with him you have a legit top 6

No matter how good Demko was in games 5,6,7. Markstrom got them there in the first place. He still has to be their guy. Commit term to him

Tanev has to come back. High Character and a warrior. No argument

Leivo takes a prove it deal after an injury. Still a capable bottom 6 scorer

Motte gets a contract he deserves after a great playoffs

Gaudette is ready to be the 3rd line centre next year. He stays

Stecher had a great playoffs. Showed he belonged in a top 4. Takes a 2 year prove it deal that will see him as a Ufa at the end of it.

Zack Macewan is a cheaper Virtanen. Sign him and move Virtanen

  1. Pickard, Calvin
  2. Svechnikov, Evgeny
Détails additionnels:
Canucks need to move Demko or Markstrom before the expansion draft. You cant lose one of them for nothing. Detriot doesnt have a goalie worth protecting right now and could easily protect demko. The canucks get a cheap backup in pickard or the could fill the void in free agency with a similar contract if PIckard doesnt work. Svechnikov still has upside and the Red Wings have plenty of other wingers coming up. You wont get much more for a guy GMs know you have to move.

VAN

  2. Choix de 4e ronde en 2021 (MTL)
Détails additionnels:
Virtanen + Beagle should net a few mid round picks or maybe a late second. Doesnt have to be to montrel but they have the cap space to sign Virtanen and wont be hurt by the Beagle contract. (assuming the Domi signing/trade doesnt hurt them) This is a cap dump for the canucks but Virtanen has some value and beagle is still a capable player in the bottom 6. Could also package Sutter + Virtanen for a similar return but i like sutter when hes healthy more than beagle

Not a nessicary trade to make the cap work but if you can move on from Baertschi you should. A team will take a chance on him and move up a few rounds in the draft.

Demko definitely carries more value than that. The team could afford to keep him past this summer, and make a decision on who to trade come deadline/draft of 2021. They could sign Markstrom this offseason, and if Demko steals the show, they move Markstrom out. If not, Demko can be moved out.

MTL are definitely not taking Beagle contract
Sutter Beagle Roussell Eriksson are aLl capdumps
MTL could do Sutter + Virtanen vs 3rd + 4th IF Domi is traded for someone not too expensive

Im assuming Markstrom comes back with a NMC of some sort. If he doesnt I 100% agree with you and you should split starts next year and see who your guy is, thus moving the other at the deadline/draft to a team that can protect him. And as for Demkos value it could be a bit higher than that but everyone knows the canucks need to move him so you probably wont get full value for him

Could be to a team other than MTL. I believe two NHLers, One with some pretty good upside, can be worth a few mid rounders. MTL also has lots of picks. I also said in the explanation is could be sutter and not beagle but as a nucks fan i like sutter more and would rather keep him. Would be fine with that too though

Maybe its because im a Canucks fan and im hard on Demko but he was quite inconsistent during the regular season. He is far from a sure thing in my eyes

I agree. The clear starter was Markstrom. These 2 playoff games were huge for him, but not enough. If someone overpays you, trade him. If not, hold on to both and give yourself more time to make that decision.

As a Habs fan, I take that deal. Beagle, although overpaid, is a solid 4th liner that is great on faceoffs. He's also right handed. At Center Habs have only two righty's at C and both are rookies (Suzuki, Evans). MTL can absorb or bury his contract easily for getting Virtanen.

100% agree. If anything those games added to Demkos trade value. If you resign Markstrom your more than likely giving him a NMC. Thats why i traded Demko and not Marky but i 100% agree

Virtanen has 20+ goal upside while playing a physical game. Him alone is worth a 3rd and 4th easy and a team like MTL without Cap issues should be taking advantage of teams that have the cap issues

Like I said I rather have Sutter because he got 1 year remaining and I want to keep Evans 4C. Byron-Evans-Sutter could be the 4th line, I really don’t want to have Beagle and is contract, rather send a better pick to have Virtanen + Sutter then Virtanen + Beagle

Virtanen is worth a 2nd, but if we take one of Beagle or Sutter, we send a lower draft pick ( Beagle and Sutter have negative value )

I can agree with that. Couple of complications with Sutter and his NTC, but if he's willing to waive, I'd do that for sure. At that point your paying more of a premium for Virtanen though, probably looking a adding a 2nd or a decent prospect

Mete vs Virtanen + dumping Sutter ? Could be good for both teams, maybe even throw Benn and we will send Verbeek ( AHLer to balance the contract ) @Blazingbat11

We could get so much more value for Demko. A team like Carolina could give us a top four defence man in return for Demko plus a few picks. If we do trade Demko I would at least want some good value considering he could be one of the league's best goalies in the next 3 years, while Markstrom would be like 33. and possibly on the decline.

Too much money coming back at that point adding Benn. Just stick to Virtanen and Sutter. Even if Habs sign Virtanen to a bridge deal (2 X $2.8-$3mil??), him and Sutter would still end up adding over $7mil aav in cap space...

It adds up quick...

Really nice effort, as well as the explanations in the Comments. I agree you should keep all of Toffoli-Tanev-Stecher-Markstrom.

Sutter with 20% retained has some positive value. I've shown that he could go to Nashville or New Jersey, particularly the latter.

Figures for the signings look within reason.

Welcome to CapFriendly, by the way.

Yeah this is some well made post right here. I was surprised it was a newcomer.

The Beagle trade is on point. Exactly what Bergy would do, based on the deal for Armia.

As for the Demko/Markstrom problem, I can't believe VAN, with a capspace problem, doesn't keep the cheap rookie that nearly eliminated Vegas by himself.

Markstrom is 30 and have the stats to hit the bank, IMO he will ask for too much for too long with a NTC.

I understand the will to get return on assets but sometimes you just need to keep the best guy for the future and let UFAs walk.

Well put.

By the way, the reason why I was pleased to see the retention of Markstrom in this post is that I'm tired of seeing comments asserting that Vancouver has to give good players away with bad ones in order to get cap compliance. As a mathematical exercise, I welcome this refutation of that nonsense. If I were the Vancouver GM, I would let Markstrom walk, as you would, which also solves their cap discomfort (I wouldn't call it a "problem") immediately.
