It's called a bridge deal. Some teams sign these young superstars ((Laine, Nylander, Tkachuk etc.)) to cap friendly deals until they can clear the cap space to sign them to the mega deals later on.

Barzal and his agent probably don't want to sign a big long term deal right now. They will wait until the cap goes up big in 3 years. a lot of players will probably be on shorter term deals right now. Any normal year the islanders would try and pay Barzal 10x8 years

A 4th is too much for Leddy if the Kings are also taking back Komarov as a cap dump. Make it the 2021 6th round pick and the Kings would do it.
