Hank is not just retiring and leaving all that money off the table. That seems incredibly foolish.

Where are you seeing this "increasingly credible rumor"? I've seen Rangers fans here talk about it, but from everything that I've read elsewhere, a retirement seems like a bag of hopes and dreams from Rangers fans.

Option A) Hank remains in the NHL, either with the Rangers or waives his NMC to chase a cup (Earns $5.5 mil)
Option B) Hank retires from the NHL. (Earns nothing)
Option C) Hank retires from the NHL, joins Frolunda (Earns $2 or $3 mil, but is out the $5.5 mil that the Rangers owe him)
Option D) Hank is bought out by the Rangers, joins Frolunda (Earns $5.5 mil + whatever Frolunda pays him)

Obviously the buyout isn't up to him, but I have zero idea why he'd leave the money on the table. Rangers fans will point to the fact that he's made over $98 mil during his career, but burning around 5% of that doesn't make any sense.
