I think it’s safe to include MacKinnon in that as well. Dude is an absolute monster on a fantastic contract, who performs in the playoffs and has the grit, size, skill and tenacity to lead his team to a cup. (Joe Sakic lite hopefully)

If the player you get by making such a deal gets you into contention, it means those picks are all 20th or higher, I don't have the exacts numbers but outside of the top 10 and even the top 5 of a draft, the success rate of picking a real impact player drops by a large margin, espacially if the picks becomes late firsts. Not saying it would be the case in this exact scenario with MIN and NYI because some of those picks could still be high even if MIN add Barzal to their roster but overall, chances are it's very unlikely you pick a player like Barzal even with 4 tries.

Not saying a lot of players are worth 4x1st but there's definitely much more player than Mcdavid and Mackinnon to add on that list. Just to add to my point, COL and EDM would laugh big time at you if you came with that offer for either of Mack or Mcdavid, both are worth much much much more than 4 try at somehow get a good player.

But it's not about just that move. Of course if you look at it that way you won't find many teams that are 1C away of contention. If you see further tho and you look at teams with an already good roster and playoff contention potential or deep run potential like Idk Vegas Dallas Carolina Clagary Philadelphia just to name a few, it could make sense. Not saying it would work cap wise, need wise or because of other parameters so don't take my examples to seriously but a lot of team are a one elite player away of having a real good team that can finish in the top 10 of the league and therefore have late picks in the next drafts. Can be a winger can be a Dman can be whatever you need as an organization but there is a lot of players worth that return depending on where you are and what you need as an organization. Some of those teams like Vegas or Dallas and probably others could also use some players at the same position as the elite player they just got to trade for other and more obvious need.

Anyway, lots of arguments could be made for and against such a deal from every team in the NHL but there is still a good list of players worth doing such a move.

If there’s not salary cap, a lot of player are worth more than 4 1st. But like you said Philly Vegas Dallas can’t afford 10M+ contract, what 4 1st would cost...

That's why added the part where a move like this would lead to other moves that can fill other needs and make the cap work. I'll give it to you, in reality, it would be very difficult for any team to absorb 10+M and any deal for those kind of players would include some money going the other way, but pure value wise, I think 4x1st is overrated unless you know you're team will be garbage for at least 3 to 5 years.

The Islanders are the only team that can offer Barzal an 8 year term. No it can not be done with an offersheet and no it cant be done with a trade. The deadline for a player to be on a roster and be offered an 8 year term is the trade deadline. The islanders would match any offersheet (If Barzal would sign it) into the 12 Million range.
