Description
My goal in this exercise isn't to fix everything in one off-season... that's pretty much impossible. It's identifying what we have, and being realistic about slotting players in the roles they can succeed in. Brendan Gallagher shouldn't be counted on to be a 1RW, but many would consider him a top notch 2RW (just an example).

I'm bringing in Taylor Hall as a 1LW. That puts all our LW's in their proper slot. I don't see any current UFA RWs that I would be willing to throw a lot of money at, so for the time being, I'm slotting Jo Drouin in at 1RW, even though I don't think he's meant for that role. He has potential, so he gets the benefit of getting "one more shot" at proving himself.

There's no room on this team for Max Domi. We are going with the kids down the middle, going to give them every opportunity to shine. That leaves Domi on the outside looking in. He still is an asset that can be used, so in this situation I'm using him to off load Karl Alzner. Surely, there's one team out there who can find Domi attractive enough to take on Alzer and then turn around and buy Alzner out in order to get Max Domi.

This makes the roster pretty much everything I want it to be for now. The two points I'd like to improve on in a trade scenario:
1: Upgrading our 1RW, perhaps using Drouin and a pick and/or prospect
2: Upgrading our LD. Mete can be offloaded with more assets, and make a scenario that puts Kulak as our extra d-man

With the Domi/Alzner move, and the contracts I've signed, I'm left with just under 10M$ of cap space. We could make some very interesting moves at the trade deadline with 10M$ in cap space and the cupboard of assets we've accumulated.

Future Considerations: this is a salary dump. I'm trying to use Domi to unload Alzner's contract.

I am concerned about trying to sign Hall. Not that I don't think he is a good player but it could end up like Tavares & Duchene. Seemed like a great idea to sign them but you see fast that you are stuck in a long term deal that will really hurt the team shortly after he signs

I'll gladly take my chances on a 6'1"/205 lbs left winger, former MVP, consistently puts up 20-30 goals, plays with speed (like the Habs do).

Anaheim doesn't have the cap space. You'll be hard pressed to find a team with 10 mil in cap space willing to dump half of it on Alzner...

you got me there. For that price i would take him. I don't think if he wants $10M then it is worth it.

It was used more as a concept, not necessarily that team. Maybe OTT needs some salary to reach cap floor?

Not many wingers are "worth" more than 8M$. I agree with your take.... he could want that much, but I wouldn't sign him at that price... although it could be tempting with the cap space.

Ottawa reaches the floor easily. The one team that has the room for the two is Montreal...

Why do a large portion of Habs fans seem to not like Domi? I know he isn't having as good of a year as last year but i would love to have a player like him on the team. Use his down year to negotiate hard for a good long term deal. He seems to love the big market, he has a scoring touch, has grit, and can play center if needed. If you want to roll with the younger guys down the middle just stick him on the wing and have him move over when injuries occur.

I think we would regret that Hall signing
I would use Tatar to unload Alzner instead of Domi (Domi is still a controllable asset)
We could add Kovalchuk for 1 season as a UFA instead of Hall (much cheaper option) then Caufield could replace Kovalchuk in 2021-22
I think Gallagher is still a good #1 RW option for at least another 2 years
    Line-up:
    Domi-Suzuki-Gally
Drouin-KK-Kovalchuk(replace Kovalchuk with Caufield in 2021)
    Byron-Danault-Lehk
    Poehling-Evans-Armia

Use our cap space to get a 1B option in net so we have a rested Price for next years play-offs too

It's not that I'm down on him, it's that he's something that we have quite a bit of, and he has value. You don't get anything unless you give up value. I don't expect teams to throw A1 assets to the habs for Domi, but I would like to think he's got enough value that we could use him to unload Alzner's salary for cap space.

Once you replace Kovy with Caufield, that 's a really small lineup. Hall adds some size to the lineup that we don't have. If you're asking to chose between a 8M$ Hall and Caufield, I'll take Hall everytime.

Domi and Gally are small but they don't play small
Put out Weber and Chiarot when the Drouin-KK-Caufield line is out and no-one will take liberties with them

Would you do anything else besides the moves suggested here? After offloading Alzner with Domi you've gotten almost 10 million in cap space that you aren't using. You've already signed one of the biggest UFAs. so you probably dont want to go shopping for big money on another 'star' UFA. So i don't see the point in offloading alzner and domi just to have capspace or save money. Just bury Alzner in the AHL and take the ~3.6M hit and keep Domi at ~6 million through the rest of his prime years.

Not only that but KK is much bigger now than at the beginning of the season and now is beginning to play bigger as well. Suzuki isn’t even that small, he’s sturdy, 5’11” already over 200 lbs at just 21 years old. Maybe take advantage of Columbus’s cap crunch and grab a Josh Anderson to play on the right side.

This is not how you do a capdump.

Just burry Alzner in the AHL and keep Domi.

I love this lineup, but why would we have to use Tatar to trade Alzner? Its not like the cap space is needed next season.

    Tatar - Suzuki - Gallagher
    Drouin - Kotkaniemi - Kovalchuk
    Lehkonen - Danault - Armia
    Byron - Domi - Evans

Yes it is stupid that Domi is on the 4th line, but there will be injuries and Domi could play anywhere in the lineup.
