Fixed Leafs I Think

Créé par: McRanteskog
Équipe: 2020-21 Maple Leafs de Toronto
Date de création initiale: 15 août 2020
Publié: 15 août 2020
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Leafs are tight against the cap but cannot go into next year without addressing defence.

Move Nylander for Klingberg to get top pairing RHD (and free up cap space).

Move Johansson for bottom 4 D Montour (cap neutral move).

With limited remaining cap space:
- resign Spezza
- bring in Nieto who is goI’d defensively and provides some offense
- nab Fast who’s got skill and offensive upside

That is just media nonsense

He also said that he was shocked by how fans and media are treating Marner and that Ceci was fine.

I would be very worried if he believes in what he says to the media, really worried

I think you need to take the tinfoil hat off.
For a GM to go on a 3-4 minute rant defending Marner and going out of his way to say he will be a Leaf for the duration of his contract, is pretty huge.

Could you imagine the sh*tshow and public outcry if he did move Marner so quickly after he made those type of comments. People already discredit him as it is, now he’s gunna make public statements about player A isn’t going anywhere, then moving him in a trade 4 months later? No chance. He’d lose whatever credibility he’s got left.

I still think you’d need to add a little bit with Nylander to get the job done

Yes and no.
The fact that Klingberg only comes with 2 years term then UFA needs to be factored in. What if he is adamant he wants to hit FA. Nylander for only 2 guaranteed years of Klingberg seems close to done deal

Roger that.
I chose Montour as he seems to be a popular trade away piece in most BUF AGMs

He is and the Sabres very may well move him if he can return something of value to them.

I think he just tries to protect the value of his assets.

In the end, not doing anything is no solution and I think people would understand the move.

Im assuming Kapanen +3rd is more appealing than Johansson +3rd?

Let’s agree to disagree. We will revisit at the start of next season when Marner is still a Leaf

Fair. I feel the top guy they may go for with Nylander doesn’t necessarily need a long time since they have some good specs in the system (Sandin, Liljegren, Kokkonen and Loponen, then hopefully Helge Grans in this years draft)

Definitely. Japanese is a natural RW and can also help the PK. Plus Kruger has a tendency to not play guys who struggle defensively. See Jeff Skinner

Listen, I get TOR has got a lot of D prospects in the system (I expect Sandin or Liljegren to be first call ups in case of injury), but having Reilly and Muzzin as the only seasoned veterans on the blue line isn’t enough. Klingberg I think is a very good fit especially as a RHD

That is fair. I think you are right, but I am affraid that that is the moment when I lose the remaining confidence in Kyle Dubas.

But I think also there, if the team does not produce next season, there will probably be another GM

I think putting Loponen in this conversation is a bit of a reach, but I agree, the Leafs have actually much better defensive prospects than they have forward prospects. I think Sandin and Liljegren should be in the NHL this year, and I am confident that Kokkoen can make it to the NHL too

I jumped off the Dubas wagon when they screwed up the rebuild by trying to “fast forward” it with the Tavares signing

For me it was more when he gave Marner that contract and then traded away Kadri (also because Kadri was one of my favourit all time maple leafs)

I don't actually have Sandin and Liljegren in the nhl next season. I think both could use another full AHL year, to work on small things. Get ice time, PP and PK time, and Sandin needs to bulk up so he isn't getting pushed around.

Loponen is funny because he was a 7th rounder but hes already made steps in the right direction. He'll be a bit of a project player for Tornto, similar to Hadyn Fleury in Carolina imo

Id disagree.

Nearly all the BUF guys here are screaming he’s too valuable and won’t be moved for some reason. Then half the comments are “he’s trash and won’t get qualified”. Seems like I picked a player that is splitting the room.

As for Nylander deal, Dallas could very well get set home in the first round and you’d be crazy to think they won’t make a change. Dallas was one of the leagues worst goal scorers, which Nylander helps fix. I feel like there’s a need filled and a moved asset from an area of strength here.

I don't really see it as an area of stength. try to repalce Nylanders goals and his chemistry with Matthews. Also, his abliltiy to play in different positions.

I still think if they should trade one of their bigger contracts, Marner is the guy who should be moved

But wasn't Fleury a 1st round pick? I think he has an outisde shot at making it one day, but I would not say he will for sure.

I actually liked Liljegren quite a lot this season. He transformed from an offensive D to an overall good 2-way D who is still very good on his skates.

Yeah Fleury was a first rounder but it took him a bit to fully step into the league.

Yeah i mean Liljegren is great, and i find way too many leafs fans give up on him too quickly, but again, another year to really nail down that 2 way game can't hurt (it would also be great that he and Sandin get more playing time for chemistry purposes)

Matthews is untouchable
Tavares has NMC
Marner ( see my argument above), he’s also so expensive in two years of incoming flat cap, that he will be too difficult to move in comparison to Nylander

That’s not the smart play here.

Trading Marner, you are already limited to 7-8 teams who can actually afford him. Then of those 7-8 teams who can afford him, how many WANT HIM, let’s say 4-5.

Do you think you’ll get full value for Marner? Definitely not. And if you can move him, you are limited to the assets those 4-5 teams are WILLING to give up.

It’s easy to say that Marner is expensive, he’s the problem, just trade him. But if you logically look at it. It’s not very viable at all. If given the option to keep Marner or move him and get back 70% value, just keep him

I get where you are coming from.

But who know, if a team offers enough, I'd do it. and if they would get like 85-90% of his value, the freed up cap space should make uf for the other 10%

The reasoning behind selected Montour was :
A) he seems to be a common trade in most BUF AGMs
B) he’s do for a new contract but seeing as hes the 3rd RHD in their depth chart, I figured he’d be too expensive to keep and BUF could afford to move him (knowing their depth at RHD)

Except he NOT 3rd on the depth chart,
He’s 2ND among ALL defensemen in icetime
And he played a lot of LD for us last year too
For much of the season he was paired with Ristolainen as our top pair, even though they are both RH shots
