Description
This AGM is about promoting our NHL-ready prospects, and moving on roster players who are surplus or on the fringes to get good futures returns that can be used to restock the prospect pool.

At first glance this might seem like a lot of good players to be moving, but bear in mind that we'd be getting in-house replacements for most of them, so the transition would be pretty seamless. Only one roster player would be an external addition (along with a 7D).

Jost --------------------> Dadonov (UFA)
Compher ------------> Namestnikov (resigned in UFA)
Kamenev ------------> Kaut
Cole -------------------> Byram
Zadorov -------------> Timmins
Barberio (UFA) ----> Pilut (trade)

Crucially, despite trading away 5 roster players, these moves do make the roster stronger overall. Having two rookies on the blueline would be a calculated risk, but one I think Sakic would be prepared to take, particularly given that Cole likely wouldn't be happy as 7D in a contract year.

In trading away 5 roster players for futures we would recoup 4 2nd round picks; 2 3rd's; 1 4th; and 1 5th, which would give us a big haul of prospects that will undoubtedly help extend our cup window by joining on ELC's from 2022 onwards.

      Buffalo wouldn't make that trade. Pilut and a 3rd sure, not the 38th OA pick

      You won't get Compher without giving up at least one decent piece. A 3rd has like <10% chance of becoming an actual NHL player, and Pilut isn't even in the NHL, so there isn't much incentive there for Colorado to trade Compher to you. Your offer would easily get beat.

      Add a mid to late round pick from Colorado if that gets it done then. The issue is that the Sabers don't have a third round pick this year so I think it would have to be either the 2nd this year and add a pick from the Avalanche or it has to be a 2021 or later pick. What are your thoughts on that?

      Do you really think Compher is only worth a 3rd and a depth Dman who couldn't even win a spot on Buffalo's blueline?

      Compher is a fast young middle 6 forward who plays on the PK and PP; can play C or RW; wins faceoffs; has scored at 39.2 point pace since the 2018 playoffs; scores clutch goals; and is signed at a reasonable contract for 3 years. You're going to have to do better than a 3rd + Pilut if you want a player like him.

      No I do think that. I think that the Sabers are going to not want to give up their 2nd round this year because it is almost a first rounder. They have no 3rd rounders for the next two years. So I could see them wanting to take Compher for a next year's 2nd and rolling the dice on their position or giving the 38th overall and taking a 5th or 6th. I also think that Pilut would be fine to add as a 7D or minor depth if we are moving out 3 defensemen.

      Compher's value doesn't go down just because Buffalo has less picks.

      If Pilut is a 7D in Buffalo then he has very little value in a trade as we can simply sign a comparable 7D in free agency.

      I didn't say that his value goes down. I am saying that similar to the Ottawa trade when in 2018 they had the 4th overall pick they wanted to keep it and roll the dice with the 2019 1st rounder. Same here. The 38th Overall in 2020 but want a 5th or 6th back. The other option is just the 2nd round pick from 2021 but are rolling the dice as to the placement of the pick with nothing coming back from the Avs. The only other option would be to package a group of picks together that are later down the road. Such as a 2020 4th + 2021 6th + 2022 3rd. I wasn't undermining Compher's value but rather pointing out the issue that Buffalo would have with building a package that they could keep their higher round picks.
