This is awful.
Bailey's worth more than a 4th
Leddy's worth more than a reserve defenseman, let alone retaining salary and adding a pick.
Boychuk is a cap problem, but at least he can still play. He's not worth giving up a 1st round pick for and getting nothing in return.
Komarov is whatever. I'd rather keep him than do that.
I understand the money, but he's definitely better than Kulak. Leddy isn't the damaged goods that people seem to think he is.
Yeah unfortunately this is what Isles fans don't realize. These players are a lot worse than you think and they're going to cost a lot more than you think to get rid of. I mean we can break this down analytically if you'd like...
Bailey's played replacement level hockey 2 of the last 3 seasons and is signed for 4 more seasons making 5 mil a year. No one's going to want to touch that. You're looking at a Loui Eriksson comp if you're lucky. A 4th is a gift.
Leddy's had below replacement level play the last 2 seasons. That's "reserve" defenseman level. Of the 138 dmen who have skated at least 2000 mins over the last 2 seasons, Leddy ranks 124th right in front of guys like Jack Johnson, Johnny Boychuk, Marc Staal, and Nikita Zaitsev. That's what kind of tier we're talking about. With a 5.5 mil cap hit, that's going to cost a lot to get rid of.
Boychuk's even worse than Leddy. He's basically Marc Staal but signed for an extra season. Boychuk's 132nd out of the 138. It's not simply enough to say he has no value. You literally can't put him on the ice if you want your team to succeed. Now when he was traded, Marleau was coming off a 2 year span where he was worth -0.8 SPAR (Standings Points Above Replacement), but he only had 1 year left on his deal at 6 mil and that cost a 1st. Boychuk is coming off a 2 year span where he's worth -2.5 SPAR (literally 3 times as bad) AND has an extra year on his deal. We're talking multiple 1sts coming over in a trade if you're not retaining.
Just to compare Kulak and Leddy...
Isles are pretty much screwed.
