Pens 1st is lottery protected. Because they’re in the qualifying round they now have a lotto pick, though it’s like 1%, and I’m not clear if they give up the lotto spot if they beat Montreal.

if they beat MTL they are in the playoffs and no longer have their pick. if they lose to MTL they will have a microscopic chance at Laf

I think that due to the terms of more than one conditional pick, "making the playoffs" is going to have to be defined pre-draft

Yeah, I’m still working it out. It looks like there’s about a 25% chance a qualifying round team gets one of the top 3, but that they’ll re-draw from the 8 losing teams later to decide which one gets that pick.

If the Pens lose to MTL and don't make the playoffs you can damn well be the league hands them a top 3 pick.
They owe them for screwing them out the playoffs, because there is no way in hell they should even have to have a play in.

I don't think there was much of a discussion in this. I think it was a this or nothing deal. If they had options my feeling is most teams would not have voted for his as it sucks for almost all the teams but the bottom feeders. I'm pretty sure the top 4 teams don't want to be playing each other.
