Maybe put the players your protecting as well as the players likely to be taken.
Flyers - Voracek...Solid young player with inflated salary (shouldn't be a problem for a new team.
Penguins - Pouliot unless they don't figure out Fleury then take Murray.
Blackhawks - Van Reimsdyk, good young d-man that will come fairly cheap.
Rangers - Klein, solid veteran dman
Wild - Granlund, RFA so will need a raise which will help get to the floor plus he is youngish
Caps - Johansson, solid 2nd line winger that can produce.
Avs - Comeau, Avs can pretty well protect all their assets since most of their Minor league guys are all super young. Maybe take Varlamov depending on what other goalies are available.
Sabres - Some AHLer or an NHL plug likely.
Habs -
Leafs -
Jets -
Devils -
Wings -
Isles -
Canes -
Lightning -
Panthers -
Sens -
Jackets -
Bruins - M. Subban, has great potential. Will start in AHL
Flames -
Oilers -
Canucks -
Sharks - Going to be a young forward. Just too many guys to protect in SJ. Donskoi/Karlsson/Nieto or Tierney
Kings -
Ducks -
Coyotes -
Stars -
Preds - Ellis, Going to be hard for Nashville to protect all their D
Blues -
On one hand you can lose Voracek for nothing and use the cap space.
Or
You can trade Voracek (maybe with some salary retained) and get a very good return.
IMO losing Voracek for nothing is a "fireable" offense. Is he paid more than he should? Yes. Is his contract pretty darn long? Yes. Is he still one of the better players in the league and still young enough to produce for a long time? Yes.

Nobody is going to take on Voracek's contract except for maybe Vegas. He should be scoring 80+ points a year with that contract. Vegas will have no cap issues and Voracek will be a nice building block for them but for the Flyers, that contract is handcuffing what they could do.

If i were the Habs GM I would take Voracek in a heart beat and i would give up picks and prospects in order to do it. Only problem is we don't have the cap space for a 8M guy so if you retain some salary and take back a player like Emelin. Its a done deal.
How does retaining any salary on Voracek help the Flyers? Might as well keep him if we are retaining salary.
Because by retaining a bit of salary you then receive a picks and prospects. You wouldn't pay 1.65M a year for that package of picks and prospects but you'd lose a 50-80 pt player for nothing?

You seem to forget that the Flyers don't need D men either, especially those that cost $4.1 mil for 2 more years. 4.1+1.65 = 5.75 mil only saving the Flyers 2.5 mil per. That doesn't allow for us to sign another 50-60 point player. by losing Voracek we can sign 2 50-60 point players next offseason.
I am pretty sure you would need to protect Pouliot as well so Vegas will take either Dumoulin or Pouliot I would assume, no? And Fleury would need to waive his NMC along with Kunitz
Who would you protect? I think you might be a team where Vegas looks to pick up a younger cheaper player since none of the 3 you mentioned are very good.

Kunitz's contract will expire at the end of next season, so the NTC would not be in effect. I suppose Pouliot could be up to be selected, just not sure if his value is there and whether you take the risk.

Yes, Pouliot would need protected, but won't be so he could be taken. Hopefully, JR would figure out the goaltending situation prior to the draft. Finally, Kunitz doesn't have a NMC plus he is a FA so he doesn't really matter.
Protected as of now: MacKinnon, Duchene, Landeskog, Grigorenko, Johnson, Barrie, Zadorov, Beauchemin, Pickard
I think they choose between Soderberg & Grigorenko based on this season and try to get Beauchemin to waive NTC. If so, they become MacKinnon, Duchene, Landeskog, Soderberg, Grigorenko, Johnson, Barrie, Zadorov, Pickard
