Description
The Rangers WILL make some kind of splash this offseason (if there is no CBO) simply because of the cap position they put themselves in. They cannot afford to keep all of their RFA's and ride out the last year of the Staal, Smith, Lundqvist + Shattenkirk contracts.

Someone has to go.

The simplest solution I see is a buyout of Staal + Georgiev trade (with 0 cap hit coming back):
This requires multiple ELC's being called up (Andersson and Miller in this case) and another <1m contract for a 7th D. Even this scenario puts the Rangers in quite the pickle with absolutely no wiggle room for injury throughout the year.
Something more needs to happen.

The options:

Smith - cap dump to a team that he waives for. Saves enough money, doesn't cost anything but a late pick.

Lundqvist buyout - bad look for the org and I really don't want to see anymore buyouts.

Staal buyout - as I said before, this just isn't enough.

Strome trade - has potential, but he needs to be replaced on the roster either then...can Chytil be relied on for solid 2c play w/Panarin or Kreider? perhaps, then a 3c can be had for a savings of +/- 2-3m, not quite enough in itself.

Trouba trade - another bad look for the org. Unless they can find a landing spot that really works for both the team in regards to a good return, and for him personally (not their job, but there was too much talk about the personal reasons he pushed for NY), it's a small blemish for them signing for future UFA's (but at the end of the day, it's NYC, and they can always get good FA's (see Shattenkirk situation).

DeAngelo trade - a big mistake: trading away a top 10 OD in the league who is under team control because of cap compliance issues would be incredibly embarrassing and awful asset management.

That's just about it...nothing else moves the needle enough because any piece that would be moved out needs to be replaced anyway (Buch, or anyone making less $)

Someone has to go, I'm excited and worried to see who it will be...my biggest fear is DeAngelo. In the meantime, I'll pray for this CBO we all keep speculating about...it will save the Rangers' future in my opinion.

-Trouba wasn't specifically trying to go to NYC as much as it was getting out of middle of **** nowhere Canada since his wife is trying to be a Dr. in the US. He's tradable anywhere in the US and the Rangers specifically have a history of dealing players before their NMC/NTC kicks in. There is a *reason* they started the NMC after this year. It was their way to opt out of this contract in case Deangelo/Fox made big strides. They did.

-Smith can be stashed in the minors

-Hank has been in talks with FO since before the trade deadline about his openness to a trade and where he'd want to go. It's on the table and he has a lot of value.

-Strome should undoubtedly be dealt. And when Chytil was with Kreider for the month Mika was out, he was 1st or 2nd on the team in pts/60, shots/60, and pretty much every on-ice metric. He's ready for a 2C if necessary.

That's all the Rangers need to do, not complicated. Deal Trouba, Deal Strome, Move Smith to the minors, Play the kids. That's really it.

Smith likely costs more than a late round pick, like at least a third for me
Hank should retire a ranger.
Chytil can be just as good as Strome with his linemates
For me at least, Trouba is practically unmovable, full NMC, has to be protected from SEA, was overall, just terrible this year away from JoMo, is signed to a massive deal that was a slight overpay based off his best season imo, the term is a yikes, plus NYR is dealing from a position of strength, and they have cap issues, so teams will be less likely to pay for him, he's their third best RHD, and they have more coming soon, but Nils and KAM are RHD I believe... He very well could end up the fifth best RD on this team in a few years...
DeAngelo isn't a top 10 OFD, top 10 PP QB, maybe, overall OFD, I'd say that's quite a stretch

We sit on these forums and say "...not complicated", but it really is. Any Trouba trade will be a big deal/complicated. Strome would be a newsworthy trade, and moving Smith to the minors doesn't really accomplish much because you use 80% of your savings on his replacement at ELC value anyway.

That being said, I tried sticking to your trade Trouba mantra + all the people trading DeAngelo for Hanifin, and decided to play off that: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/322989
Includes your insider knowledge???? on Henrik's outlook but instead has him retiring.
And gets rid of Strome as well in one swoop.

The whole point is to trade Trouba to a US team not a Canadian team. The valuations are a little low : Gauthier >> Bennett and Strome = a 1st all on his own. But Trouba's valuation is correct. Just has to be to a US team.
