ok, so the problem with the leafs is mainly in one area, RHD. You have Holl who as of late has struggled, Liljegren who is still very young and that's it. There is no one experienced enough, however, there is a solution. One area where the leafs are so deep that even trading 2 guys from that position would STILL be good. Left-wing. You have Mikheyev, Hyman, Johnsson, Kerfoot sometimes, Engvall, Clifford if re-signed, Agostino, and the soon to be top 6 guy Robertson the list goes on and on. Johnsson it particular is the best trade candidate, trading him get rid of more cap than any player on LW, he's high value, and still has term. With that being said who can the leafs get? 2 names come to mind, Connor Murphy and Damon Severson. Both on teams that won't be contending for a while, relatively young but experienced, contracts have term and are cap compliant. For this I'm gonna use Connor Murphy because he's cheaper, he's physical, and has good defensive numbers (something the leafs need sorely). Then there's Dermott... with Muzzin signed, and Rielly and Sandin there as well there is simply no room for him. That leaves you with a question, with goalie depth relatively ok, more than ok offense, and improved defense what can you use a Dermott trade improve. What I'm thinking is to get a goalie prospect and pick from a team that could really use his services and some teams that comes to mind are the Stars, Oilers, and Jets.
Just because the Leafs need a RHD doesn't mean other teams don't want theirs. Hawks want/need Murphy. Devils need Severson. And really there is no logic to suggest their isn't room for Dermot.
Sure Reilly, Muzzin and Sandin looks like they are the best LHD next season, but the Leafs can't just go with six NHL Dmen. Injuries happen.
I'd put Dermot on "you're playing the right side" for his summer training.
Other teams have left hand shooting Dmen play on the right side, but somehow Leafs fans think it never happens.
